Canton Zurich: Smoking Vote September 28

[From the NZZ 6 June 2008, page 51] << in German

On July 1 2008 a general ban on smoking in public buildings comes into force in Canton Zurich. (Much of this is already in effect.) A fine of up to CHF1000 is payable, plus a ban on sales of cigarettes to under 16s comes into force then too.

Bars & restaurants' fate will be decided on September 28 2008 when the people vote on banning smoking there too...

I should point out for EF irregulars that the subject of smoking in Switzerland has been done to death here, and it is not my intention to reignite it now - simply to inform on the current situation in the Canton of Zurich which has been dragging its heals...

Re: Canton Zurich: Smoking Vote September 28

The approach is all wrong.

My proposal is the only sensible one:
  • They build a wall, with machine gun turrets, through the centre of Zürich.
  • Those who smoke or who are tolerant to smokers live on one side, those who are intolerant of smokers live on the other.
  • The smoking side can cross to the non smoking side but not vice versa.
Who do I approach to get this added to the vote?

Re: Canton Zurich: Smoking Vote September 28

I've never smoked and I really don't like smoking and smokers, but we make more and more regulations for our life. No smoke, no alcohol, no dangerous sports, but no no sports at all, no unhealthy food, no leaving house after 10 pm no nothing. You do what you're supposed to do, and we are telling you what that is. That's it.

Hopefully smoking will be banned, then I'll be able to go to bars without having to smell like an ashtray afterwards. It's about bloody time ! Let smokers stink up themselves at home....

I dislike smoking and will not tolerate a smoky environment however I would stop short of saying that I dislike smokers. An nasty habit doesn't define a person's value.

As for the rest of your list - who is making these rules and who is enforcing them? They don't seem to have filtered through to my quiet area of Aargau....

Re: Canton Zurich: Smoking Vote September 28

Most big companies have banned smoking already. At my company we have "smoking booths" and it is not "funny".

I will give up this nasty habit this year. It is not only stupid, but it will also kill you.

What exactly do you mean here?

Switzerland is pretty much a mecca for what many people might consider "dangerous" sports. In fact in some cases things are very lax here regarding such sports. Basejumping, bungee jumping, off piste skiing/snowboarding and many more are regular activities here!

The Swiss may not be as pathetic as the British and may not ban smoking in pubs!

A Ban on smoking is way more than just the British. The states also have bans in many of the cities and it's great. I'm not a smoker, but most smokers don't seem to mind (unless it is raining or snowing outside). In fact, my friends tell me it is a great way to meet girls. Advice for fellow guys - always carry a lighter.

However, the way it's going in many parts of the UK there won't be many pubs left to chat up girls as they're all closing down due to lack of custom.
