I know several people who were circumcised by choice as adults (as the foreskin was causing them pain and other problems), and really wish that their parents had had it done for them when they were infants.

And not jewish, muslim, nor christian, either.

Tom
Medical reasons.

They can't know in advance this will happen, so wishing they'd had it done as kids is at best hindsight in action, and at worst implies they are Merkins who felt left out

I know at least 2 folk who also had it for medical reasons
- One after having an injury from a football in the bollocks area
- One in a fellatio-related incident involving banjo strings

We just don't fully know what the appendix could be for yet.

We arrogantly assume it has no use.
I thought it's the part where the author buries all the stuff that he can't cram into the footnotes.

This can happen, of course, although in many cases problems are caused by lack of appropriate hygiene (or education thereof).

But for every one such I'm sure there are many many thousands of men who are very happy that they were left with the protection offered by nature still intact.

Indeed, I suspect your examples are outnumbered even by those who were circumcised as children and wish they had not been.

I'm not sure where you think this is the norm, but it certainly is not the case across most of Europe. I understand that it's much more common in the US, but even there it's surely not the default option you imply.
Rates in the US have been dropping over time, but some fraction of this may be growing immigrant populations which don't have such a cultural predilection for this absurdity. Within the WASP community that I'm most acquainted with, it was a very strong default when it mattered for myself, and my impression is that there is still a strong cultural preference for it.

Unfortunately it is easy to find statistics that are all over the place - here it is claimed that rates went from 83% in the 60s to 77% in 2010. While here the CDC shows it as having dropped to 56% in 2008.

For a while, it was common in the US for hospitals to do it without even asking the parents, though with some tightening of laws, and some good old fashioned ambulance chasing, this has become rare. BTW, related lawsuits make a fascinating exhibit for those who think that such a small operation must be inherently risk free.

Yep. Not just the women, it's how these things propagate and is basically the motivation for male circ, too.
Definitely. I see no reason to assume any differences between the sexes here.

I'll leave discussion of bullying for another post, but I think the big reason why most people don't see male circumcision as genital mutilation is that the vast majority of men who get circumcised have no memory of the pain involved. They don't see it as mutilation anymore than getting your tonsils removed. If more circumcisions resulted in this undeniable mutilation, that attitude would quickly change.
Well for what it's worth, I'm circumcised, I wish I wasn't, and I see it as mutilation. How could I not when I'm confronted with a scar encircling my penis every time I look at it?

Sure, I don't remember the pain. If you punch a baby, it won't remember the pain either. What's your point? That it's ok to inflict unnecessary and intense pain on a helpless individual for selfish reasons as long as they don't remember it?

My son is intact and I wouldn't dream of making that choice for him based solely on aesthetic or superstitious reasoning, any more than I would for my daughter. If there's a definite medical need for it, or for any surgery, that's an entirely different story.

Re: Doctor cuts off boys penis during circumcision

I actually looked into this briefly before our first born owing to how routinely this is done in the US and for him to match the snip snip of his Poppa but ultimately opted against

Terrible story though

The CDC numbers are on boys at birth in US hospitals only, circumcisions performed ambulatorily aren't included. So the CDC's current 60% are kind of a no-less-than for later years. The numbers by region show that it's much less common on the west coast where some ten years ago just one third got circ'ed at birth, some 40% now. Numbers in the midwest are highest.

In Germany the rate among boys is about 10% for boys without migratory background, I see no reason to assume significant differences for Swiss boys. For boys with a migratory background the numbers probably differ significantly because of the lower proportion of Turks in CH who have 25-30% circ'ed. Some 15% of the boys with migratory background say they're circ'ed, though I think the numbers aren't too reliable as they fall with increasing age: From 15% (age 7-10) to some 12% (age 14-17). I guess shame plays a role here (see page 846 here).
