Political movement in the Jura

The town of Moutier in the Jura mountains, (north west of Neuchâtel) with 7'700 citizens, has chosen to leave the Canton of Berne and join the Canton of Jura.

In the 1998 Referendum, 41 votes decided for remaining in the canton of Bern, but yesterday 137 more votes were made for changing to the canton of Jura. A tight result, which leaves many people unhappy.

Besides the admin stuff, what are some concrete changes this switch will cause the people of Moutier?

It is a very long story - and hurt goes back a long way. A country given to another without any choice- and a new language and a new religion imposed- and prosperity for the newcomers and not for the rest. Very deep.

A fascinating story - and worth doing a bit of research to better understand the issues.

Practically, nowadays, it won't make much difference to day to day life.

At the Congress of Vienna (1815), the Jura region became part of the canton of Bern. This act caused dissention. The Jura was French-speaking and Roman Catholic, whereas the canton of Bern was mostly German-speaking and Protestant. In those days, and until very recently (those from UK and France will know) - the 2 religions were at war and totally separate. Administration, the Judiciary, schools, etc - all had to be done in Bernesetütsch from one day to the next- kids and servants, workers, beaten and punished if they spoke French or if they attended Mass. Bernese arrived with big horses and oxen and carts and took all the good lands from the Jura people- all this so that Vaud could regain its independence from Bern. As said, a very complex and fascinating story. Add the Huguenots (my lot) and the Mennonites - and it becomes even more so.

Re: Political movement in the Jura

With lots of regulations including education, taxes and such being differnet from canton to canton, a sudden chnage will probably bring with it a fair deal of confusions and chaos. But things will settle down eventually, until they decide to change back.

It's not finalized yet. Both Kanton Bern and Jura need to get a "Ok" by their repective people (public vote). The Federation needs to agree as well though that's probably just a formality as it requires an Ok by the Parliament only.

They ought to abolish Jura and give everything to Bern. I'm growing weary of their constant instigations.

Or just give the entire Welschland to France and be done with it.

It isn't really Switzerland anyway, with its dogshitty pavements and socialist mentality.

Frankly, I'd be happy if we could start by trading in Geneva and miniMia for something civilized like Mogadishu.

There is a lot more to Welschland than Geneva you know.

And at least we speak a useful language.

The outcome of the referendum has been annulled at the first instance!
Pro-Bernese and pro-Jurasien determined to get a Federal Court ruling on the mater.

The word 'Jura' is not so easy to grasp hey. It is a Scottish Island, A French Departement, A Swiss Canton, and a whole chain of moutains, from France to Germany over the whole NW border of Switzerland - and covers many Cantons apart from the Jura ... over GE, VD, NE, BE, BL ...with lots and lots of parks ...?!?

My family were Huguenots, who fled persecution in France and settled in the Jura- which was then given, without any notice, vote or any consideration, to Berne, in exchange for Vaud. Total change of religion (well by then my family had all become good Catholics, go figure...probably because Protestants' rights to land and opportunities were very limited), language, culture and loss of all good lands and apportunities to the Bernese. Although born in NE, I am officially Jurasienne, and so is my OH, and daughters and grandchildren in UK of course.

That decision is unbelievable, after over 100 years of troubles - and trouble there will be.
