Dou you have to be Jewish to call your child Ruth?

Methinks someone's jumping to conclusions.
How about the last name? Thomann is quite similar-sounding to a number of Jewish surnames such as Toman, Teumann and Tauman. Ruth is a popular name among both Jews and Christians.

Also her middle name is Moishe.

Re: Arosa has upset the Jews

There may of course be multiple origins but Thomann must (also) be a local name, more than 800 hits on search.ch that's more than 2k persons, statistically speaking.

Moishe is a different thing of course. How do you know?

I called her.

Actually, her full name is Ruth Rebecca Miriam Moishe Abraham Yitzak Ari Goldberg Thomann, but she says that strangers find that to be a bit of a mouthful so she goes by the name of Ru.

She makes wonderful chicken soup, you know.

Both of my daughters come in near the bottom, with 120 and 145.

Step-daughter only 62, and late wife 27.

Re: Arosa has upset the Jews

I could play a Trump card and say there was poor behaviour on both sides, which I believe is a fair assessment.

The hotel and tourism industry is not an easy one. Because of Chinese tourists, we now have instructions on how to use toilets. Many hotels avoid taking tourists from India because of their need to cook in their rooms using aromatic spices. There are now cards on the table politely reminding (Russian) guests to take from the buffet only what they can eat in order to avoid food waste. Then there is the problem of "he who must not be named" that tourists unwittingly bring with them. On a grander scale, we've got the loud and drunken tourists driving the locals mad. We've got hoardes of tourists ultimately driving out locals from their homes. And yet, the hotel and tourism industry needs all these tourists to survive.

One woman made a simple mistake reminding her guests about hotel policy although the hotel had been acccommodating in every other way. Unfortunately, there was no public apology from the woman, which may be a mistake on the hotel's part. On the other hand, there was an exaggeration of implying their was a case of "antisemitism" on the part of the Jewish community and the media.

We're all tourists and all part of the problem. What's the solution? You tell me.

Stay at home. Tourism is bad for the environment and bad for society.

There was no opportunity for that, apparently. The story got public because the guest told about it during a radio interview by an Israeli station.

Tourism is OK. It's the industry of mass tourism that is destroying everything. The only solution is to travel less and avoid the large groups and streams. But when you go, you go for quality and alternative tourism/ecotourism. I tend to go to more rural areas, stop my car/van a few km before the village and WALK in the village to meet locals. Less is more.

In light of all this, has the hotel actually apologised now?

(admitting they made a mistake is not an apology).

In the German language you can not "apology" but only admit you did something bad/wrong and ask for forgiveness.
