A movie about Switzerland

Have you seen this movie ?

A cure for wellness (2016) starring Dane Dehaan (Spider Man 2) , Jason Isaacs (the bad guy in "The Patriot"), Mia Goth ("Nymphomaniac")

If not, I recommend it.
I was with my (new) girlfriend and she really wanted to watch this movie. From what I saw I knew it wouldn’t be my type of movie and I really didn’t feel like watching it but then there was a mention that the story takes place in Switzerland. This then gave me two reasons to agree to spend 2 hours watching it.

The script has elements of the fantasy and horror genres but mostly is a tale, that may strike a chord with foreigners in/familiar with Switzerland. I couldn’t help but think that the people who wrote the story either intimately knew Switzerland or studied its (partly untold) history. In the end, although I still disliked a great deal of things about the movie like others who reviewed it, mostly the fantasy stuff, and even though it’s not without clichés (and settings that feel fake) in a way it’s a nugget of a movie on Switzerland .

Summary : A young executive is sent to retrieve his company's CEO from a high end, secluded "wellness center" in the Swiss Alps. The CEO is needed in the US to complete a merger but noone can get a hold of him. To his dismay, he finds that the management of the resort makes it very difficult for him to have access to his boss and many aspects of “the treatment” are shrouded in secrecy. He soon suspects things are not what they seem in this idyllic place, that apparently noone among the wealthy patients wants to leave. Strangely, once they moved in, the patients remain there, despite the super high accommodation costs. But everything looks so perfect and beautiful, and everybody is happy … All the personel is nice and polished… That is until the young executive who notices strange things, starts asking questions, then digs for answers. As he becomes a hindrance, you can see the locals ‘face change (sort of like when you happpen to complain in your real everyday life in CH). Eventually, he realizes some very bad things are happening in the resort (oh surprise) , and the patients are actually rendered sick by their treatment in order to make them stay and use their body for experiments. He confronts the director in front of all the patients in the dining room, the director and the personel respond very calmly, they have reassuring answers to every accusations, and he’s taken away. But then when he escapes and reports the crooks and their crimes to the local police … See what happens... The Swiss police officer listens kindly to him then calls the wellness center. The director/head doctor and his henchmen are soon at the police station and our man can’t believe his ears as he’s told he’s very ill and needs treatment urgently … The head doctor pretends he’s had a threatening attitude ! Turns out the Swiss police are friends with the criminals running the health facility. Now he too has become a patient for life submitted to experiments, in the secret high security block of the resort ! That has people draw similarities with the plot of “Shutter Island”, and again we find there a reference to Switzerland’s history. Anyway, that part with the cantonal police is golden, because that’s exactly what happens most of the time in Switzerland if you bring a complaint, penal or other, against a (big) business to the authorities. It goes nowhere (at the prosecution level) and you might even end up as the one being accused.

So , if you moved to Switzerland, go ahead and rent that movie you’ll have a laugh and/or learn something. Be warned though the action is boring at times (heck it takes place in Switzerland) so it’s better to watch it in good company, the atmosphere is weird and there are a number of gross scenes that may leave you disgusted, most notably the incest scene at the ending (that this particular theme is key to the story is probably a coincidence, but you’ll recall that the debate in Switzerland about legalizing incest is also something that drew international attention). I looked up the writer’s bio but couldn’t find anything about him having spent time in CH.

But hey, he did get the chance to tell us he's got a new girlfriend.
Wonder if she's Swiss. He hates our guts, no?

I know right? Had a giggle at the "(new)" as if this point had an important bearing to the whole post.
