Why is SVP popular?

Looking at the statistics of municipalities in Wikipedia, we can clearly see most of them lean toward the SVP/UDC party, especially in smaller towns.

As expats, we know SVP mostly from their immigration policy. But aren't there other reasons they are popular (in particular) in smaller/rural areas?

Re: Why is SVP popular?

Against bigger spending on Welfare.
Against expansion of governmental services.
Pro self-responsibility
Against the EU
Against closer involvement inside UN, NATO, Schengen, EU etc..
Against Swiss Army inventions abroad.

These things appeal to the Swiss since a large group of them believes in self responsibility and that the state is not a supporting mechanism but more guiding mechanism which does allow for the people to be heard through referenda.

You do not give a link to the Wikipedia you mention but in recent elections have not been scoring well.

In the last April Gemeinde elections they lost 16% of their seats vs the 2014 elections

Your topic on how to reduce the amount of red blobs clearly was a joke, you want to max them out and nothing will stop you from doing so.

Well actually one thing is..

That I have to spread more around before I can give you more...

That people as equally dumb as you make a connection does not make the connection a factual one.

Then shouldn't it always have been the case? I though SVP has relatively recently become popular!

Anti EU for one.

But I am not an SVP fan, rather a LEGA fan, who may or not agree with SVP or anybody else. (LEGA is a Pro-Ticino, so not nationalistic ).

There are different reasons for them becoming more popular, them being the only one against joining the EWR in 1992, a position backed up by the majority of the voters on the referendum gained them more sympathy, as did their position against joining UNO in 1986, immigration has become a bigger Issue over the years, they manage to get the protest votes in their direction and many more things have caused them to grow over the years to become the biggest party (on votes) about 20 years ago.

Re: Why is SVP popular?

SVP were canvassing on the high street. One approached me, and I calmly looked at him and said "Ich bin ein Ausländer". He visibly paled...

I'm a fairly right-wing chap, but I don't approve of the SVP. Their posters were clearly racist. That puts them outside of acceptable society.

Re: Why is SVP popular?

The SVP has a huge marketing budget. This sometimes makes them seem omnipresent, or perhaps more popular than they are, at least in some parts of the country.

Here, as an example, are the results of the last municipal elections in Zurich
https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/portal/...ext=standalone

The SVP has fewer seats, as does the CVP. The SP and the Green Party shows an increase.

The posters also more than racist. If you imagine them in black and white then they are reminders of Hitler and the Nazi propoganda
