The venue may differ, but the human elements do not. Late start, no map, no light, no clue. Sun sets. Panic. Cell phone to the rescue!!!!
Well, given the number of nights I camped in various spots on the Zurich side of the Üetliberg (geartesting mainly), I'd have to say these guys are dead blind. It doesn't get dark on that side, period. There's a huge sea of lights in that thar valley, wonder what that might be...

For many years I have refused to hike with a cell phone because of many examples of their inappropriate use. I eventually realized that the problem was not the phone but its inappropriate use, so I now carry a cell phone when I hike in the snowy New England mountains in winter. This year I plan to buy a cell phone (M-Budget Migros ) and immediately put the rega number (1414, I believe) in my phone book. I also plan not to need to call them!
It is 1414. Along with your Rega sponshorship card, you get stickers with the number, international numbers etc. I've stuck them to the rear of my cell.

PS: in backpacker parlance, these guys merit the "touron" patch. (tourist moron, in case you might enquire).

That restaurant, Kolbenhof, serves Swiss cuisine and is alright by the way. But I'm confident somebody can recomend a hill with a Kebab stand. It might be open longer in the evening, too.
Kolbenhof is great, always took visiting friends up there on a sunny day, to have a "Schweinesteak auf heissem Stein" on the terrace. Lovely view of the sailboats on the lake, great food.

Three Zurich residents got lost on Uetliberg (German article)

They started their journey on Monday around 8 in the evening at Triemli and left the trail with the intent to make a shortcut to the top. After dusk they lost orientation because they had no map, flashlight or clue... But they had a cell phone so they called the police. The police found them around midnight on Denzlerweg (above Albisgütli) and accompanied them to the nearest restaurant.

Now maybe that's just me as a scout, but how did they manage to get lost there? The readers of NZZ Online agree though, and wrote some pretty sneering comments...

Re: Three Men lost on Uetliberg

Sadly also this year, Zurich's eight hundreder demands its tribute. Similar to last time, a 21 and a 24 years old Swiss student from Zurich got lost between Kolbenhof and the top. They marched off last Saturday around 18:00 and tragically lost their orientation a mere 300 meters before Uto Kulm. They called the police at 19:15 when suddenly dawn had set in, and were later found by two search troops (one policeman and police dog each).

Maybe I should change careers and become a mountain guide.

Corrected that for you.

How embarrassing to be a young Zürcher and need rescuing on the Uetliberg. It's like a Londoner being shipwrecked on the Surpentine...

Re: Three Men lost on Uetliberg

Oops. Still, better lost in translation than lost on Üetliberg

vwild1 I assume they got stuck in the steep areas right below the top and the thought to turn back to the last road did't cross their minds...
