I‘m voting for cows keeping their horns. Cows still fight without horns and cause invisible internal damage.

As a veggie I naturally think the world would be a better place if we didn’t rear animals to eat at all...
Yeah, well if evolution was left to vegetarians we would still be covered in fur, sleeping in trees and getting eaten by lions. Meat is no less relevant to our diets today except we simply eat too much of it per person.

I agree, we should rather arm everyone and say 'open season'!

Strange, because I see cows all the time while hiking.

There is no practical reason for farm cows to have horns... they have no predators and it is a potential danger to themselves when packed together and to people walking through their fields who might unluckily be charged and pierced by one.

See google: about 700,000 cows are slaughtered in CH each year - the ones you see are the dairy cattle.

The no practical reason part is one of the excuses used to get the cows packed in tightly.

Re: Is Switzerland for real-cow horns vote! Hornkuhinitiative

Until 20-30 years ago it was legal to clip your dog. Now, if it still was and some group wanted to change that they'd obviously propose to ban the clipping of dogs.

Here we have a similar situation with cow horns. However, instead of proposing to ban the procedure the farmers are to get paid do do something that's supposedly (probably?) beneficial for the animals they claim to love and care for in the first place.

Only in Switzerland!

If it's harmful (enough), de-horning is to be banned. Otherwise it's simply the farmer's own decision, be that because it isn't harmful or because economic interests are prioritised.

Well, we could go back to natural hunter-killer, or early agrarian societies, and eat what we catch without animal husbandry.

This includes "eating each other" as well a reducing the human propulation by well over 90%

these cows are naturally hornless: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Poll

with GMO techniques they can transfer this characteristic to other cow races as well

GMO in this case can't surely be harmful in any way, but alas

Apparently a tiny percentage of the Swiss cows are naturally hornless due to a not-that-rare dominant genetic defect. Details differ between cow race groups, but it looks like the horn gene is recessive in all cases, the defect for hornlessness dominant.

From 2012-2014 169 individuals with a PP [hornless/hornless] combination (including 72 bulls) have been identified in a nationwide survey (I take that as something like 0.008% based on 700k born each year), so the mutation should occur often enough to breed a hornless variant by traditional breeding alone. Since the mutation is dominant a bull with the hornless mutation on both chromosomes of the relevant pair is guaranteed to have hornless offspring only. Apparently the defect can be tested for, a crucial feat as the bulls need to be PP with certainty to make the whole thing practicable.

So, hornless cows without burning the horns off while avoiding inbreeding should be doable by traditional selective breeding and with reasonable effort. If it's seen as worth the undertaking, that is.

This short report gives a nice overview, available in German only I'm afraid.

Nice line I read in the Spectator this morning:

Vegan - sounds like a mix between a woman's private bits and a Doctor Who monster.

I gave you a thanks for this because I appreciate your viewpoint. I agree with cows keeping horns, but I disagree with paying farmers not to remove the horns. I also agree the environment would probably be better if we didn't rear animals for food, at least on such a mammoth scale.

Vegetarian, but not vegan?

Vegan, but don't sweep the ground in front of them to avoid stepping on any ants?

Pfft, hypocrites..

Re: Is Switzerland for real-cow horns vote! Hornkuhinitiative

I love the sight of Swiss cows and appreciate their horns but horns pose a danger to both people and other animals. I really need to talk to some Swiss farmers first before I make a decision.

Avocados, palm oil and other mass-produced vegetables, fruit, seeds, etc. also pose a long-term risk to the environment, so sometimes I think arguments by vegans or vegetarians are a bit short-sighted.
