Is Switzerland for real-cow horns vote! Hornkuhinitiative

Now they are voting on whether the Swiss govt pays farmers to keep the horns on the cows and not cut them off. Wacky!!

In Switzerland, only about 10% of cows have horns. Yet the images in Swiss advertising and tourism literature suggest otherwise.

Re: Is Switzerland for real-cow horns vote!

It's actually a complicated issue that involves tax payers' money, safety, health and tradition.

I agree this shouldn't be a public vote but a decision made by the Bauernverband and vets.

The decision already has been made by the BV and the vets. Cows without horns can parked much closer together in less space. Allowing a better factory efficiency. Cows are also forgetting what fresh green grass is. They, together with pigs and chickens are rarely to be seen in our landscape today.
Fortunately the 'Butter Berg' has found takers and is being constantly replenished and sold off by exporters at well under cost - and at our expense. Thanks to the SVP.

Re: Is Switzerland for real-cow horns vote! Hornkuhinitiative

Thanks for the "horns up" and Capaul is right!

Should this initiative fail, consistently all advertisement for Switzerland (from chocolate all the way to tourism) should be with cows without horns. See how they'll like it then.

I know they still chop off dog's tails and ears out there. It's time the Swiss cows get the same right as the dogs and cats. Capaul is actually very moderate with his initiative to financially support farmers who stop mistreating their cows.

Strange, because I see cows all the time while hiking.

There is no practical reason for farm cows to have horns... they have no predators and it is a potential danger to themselves when packed together and to people walking through their fields who might unluckily be charged and pierced by one.

Which issues that go to a referendum aren't complicated and don't involves tax payers' money, safety, health and tradition?

Billag doesn't but almost all the others do.

Out where? Do you mean that ear- and tail-cropping for dogs is still going on in Switzerland in some wholesale fashion, against the law?

Well perhaps it is time to stop pakcing them so close together?

And for people to walk across their field and get too close when they have calves with them. Cows will charge in those circumstances, horns or no horns.

As for the statistics of people being pierced with them in Switzerland, could you give us figures please?

No, I actually meant accross the border. But your remark made me google and find out, it's actually illegal in lots of countries.

It's not that they are smarter than pigs and you have no problem with people eating pig meat, so what's the issue?

I‘m voting for cows keeping their horns. Cows still fight without horns and cause invisible internal damage.

As a veggie I naturally think the world would be a better place if we didn’t rear animals to eat at all...
