I've met and talked to more like that but I'm sure you appreciate that's because stricter Muslim women just wouldn't chat to a stranger if he was a man so, yes, I haven't heard the other side of the story.
But this is a classic mistake, assuming that if you spoke with a few you figured them all out. In reality people are as divided on this theme and in those places as everywhere else with a lot of different subjects.

I personally think it's also a generational thing. I could see the difference to a family acquaintances from Egypt in 3 different generations: grandmother - dressed very strictly although not in a full veil, her daughter (just a few years older than me) dressed like what I would call decently (as I don't really get the modesty thing, modesty to me has so many meanings other than strictly speaking of attires) longer blouses or coats, nothing too tight or too revealing, the hair fully covered with a French beret not a headscarf, so nothing I didn't see before at other women, regardless of their religion. Her daughter - beautiful curly hair all wild and uncovered...so you can see three different types in a single family, imagine the rest...I think it's funny how men want to figure out women, to put a label, to categorise....anything new here?

Oh, those ambitions are probably long gone (I really hope).....more like people want to decide on certain things in their own countries, nothing more.

With open borders they have to rethink their nationalism. And why dont they ban the Arab men from wearing their traditional dress. They could be hiding guns and drugs underneath this frock

Tell that to the staunch Brexiteers ! Yeah. But no. Apparently things don't work that way in real life - telling people what they have to or don't have to do.

Exactly!

(and actually only 51% or something from those who voted, at that. Talking about divisive issues...)

I did write that I had only heard one side of the story. Not sure how I could have made that clearer.

Not by a long shot. The US denies public health aid to other countries if they advocate for family planning too strongly.

I think you admitted that only after a few posts.

Wow. Perhaps you're right, all those money or aid of other nature comes with some absurd compromises. (do not do as you think it's best for you or according to your reality, do as we tell you it's better for you or else)But seriously, you can say the same about other ideologically driven requirements. This happen to derive from Christianity, or at least from a more conservative form.

The thing about family planning has been a fixture for years. Maybe since Reagan. I don't remember. And sure, nothing is really "free" is it?

I don’t see many but they’re not unusual on Bahnhofstrasse in ZH. Maybe more common in Geneva. No idea if they are tourists, residents or what.
Really? Burqas? as in this:

I see regularly Arabian ladies in their black Niqabs. I have never seen a real life Persian burqa in CH.

OK, so it was a niqab. Does that make a difference to the point of the thread?

A full body veil in blue or black with a slight design alteration on the eye bit.

Although your photo is of women wearing Afghan Burqas. Iranian women are much more likely to wear a Chador.

Sure. If we are talking about limiting civil rights does it in my eyes make a lot of sense to first of all understand who we are talking about. As I said before do I fully support a ban if it is necessary to limit the spread of radical ideas. But if the only full veils we ever see are just some wealthy Arabian tourists going watch shopping... is it necessary to limit all our freedom for them? Are they a danger to our values or society in any way?

For me does it make a difference if from all the Afghan refugees we have in Europe I personally have not seen ONE woman continue to wear her Burqa.

That, according to a few posters on this thread, is purely because they've changed their mind about wearing one.

Absolutely. For me ALL religious symbolism is a load of bollocks but if people want to wear it, who cares? Banning it outright across the nation is a bit short-sighted, given that there appears to be an element of the tourist-type visitor coming from that culture.

If all of them change their mind once they live in a free country, why would we need a law to force them and make our countries a little less free then?
