Wrong. Most result from glaciation during the last ice age and the subsequent warming and consequential melting of the glaciers. Cooling of the climate brought the ice, warming melted it again.

But the pace of the warming today is MUCH faster than ever seen then.

one example

"The Himalayan mountain range and Tibetan plateau have formed as a result of the collision between the Indian Plate and Eurasian Plate which began 50 million years ago and continues today. The African and Eurasian plates collide in the Alps. The African plate has been moving northwards over the last 130 million years and is pushing against the Eurasian continent. The rocks are deformed and folded by the immense pressure and the Alps are still uplifting today by one to two millimetres per year."

Tectonic movement is what put the alps there in the first place. Erosion by glaciers is what carved the deep valleys into them. And in places like ZŁrich, the actions of glaciers is what piled up the moraines, or collections of debris, which later became the various hills and even smaller mountains thereabouts. So glaciers both tore down geological features and built them up.

Geologists even say that the little lake known as Kazensee was caused by a particuarly large lump of ice left there by a retreating glacier that managed to sink some way into the soft subsoil before finally melting.

Stop pussy-footing around and face the facts finally. Here the basics in a nutshell for beginners.

Tom, what is your problem with it?
It fascinates me.

We know you are a good guy with a good wife and have great moral values. That you like to cook a good meat dish (but also have a fantastic repertoire of vegetarian chilli etc.) is also fine. The motorbike hobby is cool.

Why are you so against this?

Thanks for this post Sandgrounder.

To the original post on the significant decrease in biodiversity, although Iím well aware that posting on this subject on EF falls on long-dead ears (or is there still hope?).

Biodiversity is important in its own right, and biodiversity is important for human well-being.

But we humans are destroying it.

To the report released by IPBES this Monday, from which the post was derived: In 1992 at the Earth summit in Brazil the convention on biodiversity was signed, recognising that biodiversity loss needed to be halted.

Since 1992, the loss of biodiversity has accelerated even faster than any of st2lemans motorbikes.

And we ignored the warnings of 30 years ago.

The evidence in this report showed that biodiversity is not only an environmental issue, but itís also an economic, development, security, moral, ethical, and social issue:

- Biodiversity has incredible economic value: itís central to development through food, water, and energy sustainability
- Itís a security issue because the loss of natural resources, especially in under-developed countries can lead to conflict
- Itís a moral issue, because the loss of biodiversity hurts the poorest of people further exacerbating an already inequitable World
- And itís an ethical issue - we should not destroy nature

Unless we act now, we will undermine human well-being for future generations. Switzerland or not - itís a Global issue.

For anyone still with their head in the sand:

The following, released yesterday, which is surprisingly bad reporting from my point of view:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-48169783

And the original release held this Monday, which should be a must view for anyone who gives a damn about the immediate future of the Planet for either their kids or other reasons:

There is so much going on on this topic at the moment, because itís urgent. For any EFers that care:

Don't worry for mother earth guys, two years ago there was a strain of yersinia pestis (plague) which was already resistant to 7 different types of antibiotics. Maybe the problem solves itself within the next 50 years.

omtastat - you seem like an intelligent human being (if you dig down very deep). Inform yourself more, and you might be surprised how it expands your knowledge

We know its happening but as an individual there is nothing that can be done. Simply go with the flow.

I don't want to hijack this thread - but you have the same attitude that I had i.e. digging my head in the sand. Don't do it - get informed - all the change that is happening at the moment is making a difference in recent weeks, Worldwide. You don't strike me as someone who is happy to stay ignorant (despite all), so get informed.

Yes in Switzerland and other Western Europen countries maybe. We have anyhow pretty tight regulations. But go to Eastern Europe, India or China or USA and see whats happening there. And dont forget the gas masks.

Inform yourself better, because the actions of Extinction Rebellion have also awakened these countries in the past weeks. As to Europe, here's today's latest:

As to China, also brilliant:

These studies have been going on since decades. The results have been available since decades. Due to the mobilisation actions of Distinction Rebellion, it's now become apparent to previous idiots / deniers such as you and me.

Many people have far more pressing concerns such as putting food on the table, holding down a job, raising kids etc. to care too much about "climate change".

I challenge you on this. I know very well from experience how it is.

I think it was quite appropriate that Extinction Rebellion brought London to a complete standstill. No one could get to work, people prevented from buying food, transport ground to a halt... all a taste of things to come should the ecoloons ever get into power.

Exactly, that was the goal - great that you confirm it! But it resulted in great change! Will take on all the shyt the forum has to offer, then will give you a summary of what XR achieved (or you could keep up to date beforehand).
