Schmid conference at 16:30

Samuel Schmid will be giving a press conference at 16:30 today to discuss the Nef case.

Possibly it will be the suspension or resignation of Nef, maybe even the resignation of Schmid.

Now if Schmid does resign they will elect a new Bundesrat member, assuming that the magic Formula is kept to this will be SVP.

Does this mean, God forbid, that we're going to get Blocher back?

For an explanation of the whole Nef business here's a Swissinfo linky.

Schmid will not resign, I think. Who should be in the position to force him to?

There... Schmid doesn't even think about resigning, and Nef is on leave. Articles will follow.

Re: Schmid conference at 16:30

Well, according to the radio, Nef will have time until 20th August to present all the facts before the next Bundesratsversammlung (sorry, not the combined chambers of parliament, only the ministers (what do you call a Bundesrat in English ??), mis-heard that on the radio) - I guess his fate will be decided there.

As for Schmid resigning - look out for all the SVP heads turning up in the next few weeks to show how incompetent he is and that a more solid Bundesrat will be needed now, from the SVP of course...
If they succeed, that's another question. But the point that really should be discussed - are the allegation true and if/when so, how did he get there in the first place - not an inappropriate question... Let's see how it works out...

It does appear that most of pushing has come from the SVP, I suppose since Schmid left to join the BDP it is only natural.

Re: Schmid conference at 16:30

I'm not sure there is any way anyone can force Schmidt to leave until the next Bundesrat election in 3 1/2 years. Perhaps Nathu can shed more light on this?

All the parliament can do is not elect him vice president of the federal council, which by the informal turnus and my calculation should be due in 2011 and is a symbolic job. In other words, the parliament can do nothing. Nor can the SVP.

The interesting thing is, he hasn't joined BDP yet! There's no hint of his membership on the bdp-be.ch website, and on the federal council's official website admin.ch he is listed as neutral. Perhaps he thinks that BDP, a ship with 800 seamen, isn't ready to sail the waters of national politics yet.
