The US would go apeshit if any "western" Country bought Russian weapons.
Remember what happened to the DDR´s armoury after the US "leaned" on Germany? The Wehrmacht, sorry NVA, was scrapped almost as soon as the ink was dry, The Volksmarine got it´s assets flogged, the army was scrapped and disbanded, only the Luftverteidigung was allowed to fly a bit longer before the Mig29´s were turned into razorblades and tin cans.
Sorry, but the Eastern German army was equipped with second rate junk from Russia. The MiG 29 was the exception, so it was kept. All the missiles for example were not Eastern German, but Soviet Russian army stationed in Eastern Germany...

The reason the people were kicked out is pretty simple: They werent just soldiers that protected their country from an outside attack, but the people who shot Eastern Germans trying to cross the border. Do you think keeping an officer who killed civilian countrymen is acceptable in a democratic country?

There was a big discussion at the time what to do with the "junk." Although the army equipment was not state of the art, it was however pretty much mainstream for Warsaw pact forces. The Volksmarine assets were sold on down the food-chain. Malta got two patrol boats for instance, the P31 and the P29, after years of service they were turned into dive sites. You are not quite correct about the NVA shooting border crossers, those soldiers tasked with guarding the borders were the Grenztruppen and since the early seventies not part of the regular NVA

Well, perfect examples. I know them since I dived there: They were originally not patrol boats but mine sweepers. Build somewhen in the 1960s. So they were already twenty years old when they were sold to Malta and lets just say not that modern or efficient. I am sure Malta got them cheap, but Germany honestly did not need all the old gear from the commies...

I freedived (freedove?) both of them, even going into the P31 once.
The government was seriously contemplating to fly the Mig29´s as Luftwaffe assets and the Russians offered to keep them in spare parts and upgrades. Don´t think the amis were too keen on that.

I dont think it had much to do with the Americans for once… the European aerospace industry was pushing the national governments to build a new generation fighter jet. In Germany was it known as "Jäger 90". As in 1990. The year of the reunification… thats when it was supposed to be ready. They later called it Eurofighter and for exports "Typhoon" as it would have been politically difficult to change the name from Jäger90 to Jäger00 as it was more than a decade late…

The MiG29 was a great plane, but not the sort of multipurpose plane the German Luftwaffe needs: Germany needs a multirole which can be used to patrol during peace and turn into a fighter-bomber in a Nato defense scenario. Because we have American nukes stationed in the country which would need to be delivered by German planes despite the country being part of the "Non-proliferation Treaty". You would not be able to do that with a MiG. Thats why the Tornados were kept in service so long...
