Re: Does Switzerland need missiles?

The question is against what:

The answer is: Any enemy missiles as well as hostile military aircrafts flying in the altitude of 3800 m and above.

Hope they also consider the Russian S-400 which is far more versatile than the US Patriot system. Three of those system with 9M96E2 missiles at the old ZG-Gubel, SO-Hellchöpfli, and FR-Torny bloodhound sites would cover and protect nearly all of Swiss airspace https://s.geo.admin.ch/81ebd9e6f2

Thanks do Bin Laden can you add high-jacked civilian airliners. Nobody likes to talk about it, but if terrorists would try to fly over CH with the risk to crash one of those into a city or a nuclear power station am I sure the Swiss would rather down it...

While I agree that Russia has some reliable products on offer: I dont think the Swiss even consider them properly. Just like when they were looking for a new fighter plane a few years back... not that the Sukhois are that amazing, but clearly a better choice than the Saabs they were testing.

More that we do not care about st2lemans and his friends the much. The Mittelland is the most important region https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittelland_(Schweiz)

But as I said the S-400 is quite versatile. Load it with 40N6E missiles and you are all set. One System at the old AG-Bettwil site is good enough for anything https://www.mapdevelopers.com/draw-c...22%2C0.4%5D%5D

But also the Israeli David's Sling which actually might be purchased with a range of 160km, plus an additional southern system should address your concerns.

For further info from the Swiss government and air force see the Air2030 documents:

Won't happen, the S-400 aren't NATO compatible.

Re: Does Switzerland need missiles?

Just an info : the Bloodhound Missile site at Gubel / Menzingen is now a museum, well worth a visit for the technically inclined.

( Preregistratation req'd, open just a few day each year )

http://www.bloodhound-museum.ch/

I once visited a chap that used a Bloodhound Ramjet engine as a coat stander....

Who cares neither are we a NATO member. But Switzerland and Russia are member of the Partnership for Peace, that's good enough. Second, the most likely aggressor will be a NATO member. Third, also NATO member Turkey is interested in the S-400 system along with F-35, most likely because one is the best on the ground whereas the other the best in the air (O.k. they might not get the F-35 because of that). Diversification also helps to defend against any aggressor but not only against the hypothetical "BöFei von Rotland".

Nonetheless the closeness is obvious, and CH keeps moving closer. There's a reason CH never bought any army stuff from Russia.

ETA: Let's hear it from the horse's mouth:
Quote:
The PfP helps prepare Switzerland’s armed forces for their participation in peace-keeping missions abroad under the command of NATO, the EU or the United Nations (UN).

Here the real horse's mouth. The official list of PfP members.

Didn't know that all of them use "NATO compatible" weapon systems.

Re: Does Switzerland need missiles?

The US would go apeshit if any "western" Country bought Russian weapons.
Remember what happened to the DDR´s armoury after the US "leaned" on Germany? The Wehrmacht, sorry NVA, was scrapped almost as soon as the ink was dry, The Volksmarine got it´s assets flogged, the army was scrapped and disbanded, only the Luftverteidigung was allowed to fly a bit longer before the Mig29´s were turned into razorblades and tin cans.
