Introduction of a citizen service for all

The idea: a duty of service to the general public. A service that, depending on the interpretation, also applies to women as well as to foreigners with an unlimited residence permit.

The civil service could help, according to postulate in a world of individualism, "to strengthen social coexistence."Haha

So pack your bags!! You're off to join the foreign legion

And if you refuse you can forget about ever becoming a Swiss citizen!

Re: Introduction of a citizen service for all

It would be something bigger than civil service, basically military service but civic. I think it would be a nightmare and costs would be obscene. It sounds borderline fascist as well, the state making people do mandatory work for the motherland, likely underpaid and interfering in the economy, without any rational reason at all (at least the military is about national defense).
The federal council didn't even bother to answer the questions point by point so I'm not too worried, they are already worried about keeping the current levy system and making adjustments to have more people without sozis getting riled up about it.

Re: Introduction of a citizen service for all

I think that the military can already carry (has already carried) out some of these functions. When I was a company commander many years ago my unit was stationed in the Valaisan alps. Many of the guys in my unit were people with skills such as carpenters, civil engineers etc. It was at a time when the cold war had come to an end and the military was looking (with some difficulty it must be said) for a justification for its existence. Up until then, all exercises had focused on a red enemy coming from the Northeast!

Anyway, although we found a way to carry out the exercises that had been mandated, I also felt that it was important to try and help the local community. The first year we offered our assistance and we were asked to fix a local bridge over a stream and also to do some work cleaning up and securing local footpaths. The guys were VERY motivated and did a great job. The local mayor expressed his thanks.

The following year, I offered our assistance again. This time the local community pulled out all the stops. They had suffered from bad storms and needed a lot of things fixed. They arranged a helicopter to carry equipment up the mountain. They had a plan. I needed to do nothing to motivate my team. They were delighted to be able to do something useful. At the end of the course, the local community organised a dinner for the team that had assisted them and were truly grateful. This cooperation continued for a few years until I was discharged.

I think that if the military can use its time and resources to do what military training is necessary, but also to offer help to local communities while they are present in the area, it would not only go a long way towards fixing the army's tarnished image among the population, but also to motivating conscripts who resent having to spend time sitting around waiting to do (often) pointless and make-work exercises.

Re: Introduction of a citizen service for all

Aslong as the services to be offered are not competing with commercial businesses or pushing out trained and skilled people in fields where we do need those (Like fire brigade to just name one) I am completely in favour of something like this.

Re: Introduction of a citizen service for all

I like the idea.

Now, the question is how to keep these services from competing with private enterprises, or how to implement some countermeasuer. Certainly Germany, probably others as well, have lots experience with that by now.

There is no reason they should not compete with the private sector. There is no point in having a dog and barking yourself.

Nonsense.

The Swiss government doesn't pay market rates for mandatory service. Thus they can easily underbid private business and push them out of the market.
