Nope. It's an expression of not taking things too seriously. I use this one for sarcasm To me, it looks like you're claiming 2+2=5. Clearly to you, it looks like I'm claiming 2+2=5. So there will be, and cannot be a meeting of minds here.

That's kind of ironic. Nothing to fall out over. Even if I do appear to be a jerk - just arguing a point of logic, not of ethics.

So that's what sarcasm looks like. Have often wondered.

Yeah. The maths analogy I can agree on.

That's conception, isn't it? For those who believe in reincarnation, it must be before. You bastards, you killed Kenny. Again.

Re: Laderach (Läderach)... run by anti-gay and anti-abortion religious fundamentalist

So what do the employees think about working for Läderach? Surprisingly, the employee I spoke to said staff truly enjoy the working atmosphere, the product, the salary (which, although mid-range, has many added perks) and their management. The employee continued to say how the company treats their workers fairly and their work is valued.

And what do think about their boss? Many feel he's being treated unfairly by the media. Everyone has their beliefs but the Läderach family has been wisely private on theirs. It is true that they do belong to a more conservative church but otherwise, the family keeps their beliefs strictly separated from their business. In fact there are many homosexuals working for Läderach and not once has it been an issue for any of them. Basically, although most employees may not agree with Läderach's personal beliefs, they are proud of their company, their product and are grateful to work in such positive a climate. They feel respected and, consequently, have immense respect for the family.

Moreover, most employees feel that a liberal political organisation caught whiff of the Läderach's family personal beliefs and fed it to a Swiss newspaper. Fortunately, sales have remained unaffected and the backlash of the article has already been losing steam.

Is it fair to paint someone black when he's responsible for such a well-running company with satisfied employees? After hearing the employee sing such high praises for the company he works for, it made me realise that there are two sides to every story and the journalist did a half-assed job of reporting it. Had they spoken to employees working for Läderach, the newspaper could have given a more balanced picture of the company and helped to separate the beliefs of the founding family from the success of their business and their satisfied employees.

Of course, but they wouldn't get as many clicks on the website or eyeballs reading the page. This seems to be what most journalism is reduced to today - a sensational headline, a poorly researched article, and very little editing or proofreading.

Blacking your face up is a whole new can of worms.

Oops, I went there... although the evidence suggests Canada is a well run country with satisified citizens

Thanks for noticing that. Perhaps I should have used another idiom in this day of age. I wonder if anyone has ever made a list of idioms and phrases that are no longer PC in today’s society? A good topic for another thread.

Sorry, slightly OT, but we've always said "painting someone in a bad light". Never heard the "paint someone black" thing.

It's an expression in German, I take it olygirl started to translate things from German into English (mot a mot) and they don't always sound right...I do the same with English (English idioms translated into my native language sound a bit weird, but it happened to me quite often)

Btw, what olygirl has posted doesn't surprise me at all. Laderachs employees seem to enjoy their work, do it well, and return the respect that has been extended to them back to the customers....not guilty for their employer's views.

Yes, that's true - hadn't thought of that. Reminds me of a Swiss colleague that was talking about someone "driving black on the train" (schwarzfahrer) when I first moved to Switzerland. Had utterly no idea what she meant at the time...

Many times, yes. But sometimes is not only lack of professionalism or just ignorance and bias, it's intentional. They might be stupid, but they know what they do. The media is used in our today soft wars.

Sorry, just an observation, not necessarily related to the Laderach case.

Man, I knew it didn’t sound quite right but it was late at night and I wanted to put my thoughts “on paper” while they were still fresh.

The trouble with white chocolate is that it ain't really chocolate. Läderach or not.
<<White chocolate is made with a blend of sugar, cocoa butter, milk products, vanilla, and a fatty substance called lecithin. Technically, white chocolate is not a chocolate—and it doesn't really taste like one—because it doesn't contain chocolate solids.>>

Enjoy

Wrong answer. It should be:
What do you do when you see a red door?
I want it painted it black.

There's no indication that it was ever achieved. Nor that you're the one going to do the work.
