Manor flagship store ZH

Oh nei, say it isn't so. Manor flagship store in Zurich to close (or at least move to another location) I only have the swiss news link sorry :

https://www.srf.ch/news/regional/zue...bahnhofstrasse

I used to frequent that Manor and the Manora restaurant at the top floor for years and also now whenever i make a visit back.
Apparently it has been in the news for years over dispute on the rent but this was the first time I heard of the news (well living out of Switzerland also keeps me out of the loop) Globus is not my cup of tea and Jelmoli too schicki micki ...so Manor was the perfect medium

Re: Manor flagship store ZH

As you say, it's been in the news for years and it's been a slow-motion train crash.

It has a bit of a sad note for me personally as the first girl I ever dated after arriving in Switzerland was a cashier in Manor.

I have no idea about the Manor in Zurich but the store in Neuchâtel is rumoured to be closing at the end of next year and if it does I will be devastated, we have precious few decent shops here as it is and Manor is definitely a favourite of mine.

Oh that's a shame. Is that the one that was in Marin Centre? I remember when the Neuchatel centre one closed it really affected the city centre until the Zara opened.

I know the one in NE, didn't it used to be called Placette? or was that in GE? That is a shame. Neuchatel is where i studied for 1 year so i like the city too.

You’re thinking of Globus, no idea how that’s still going as there are always more staff than customers it seems to me.

Manor is next to Jumbo which is also rumoured to be closing.

Well, I would also be rather flabbergasted if my landlord suddently wanted more than 3 (three) times the price. And obviously even without improvements.
<<
Besitzerin und Vermieterin Swiss Life wollte den jährlichen Mietzins für die 14'000 Quadratmeter grosse Fläche von 6,3 auf 19 Millionen erhöhen.>>

I hope SwissLife will sit on an empty realty for years. Or even better; some Chinese rent it for 19 million and fail to pay.

They probably insured their pending loss within their own company.

The sad thing is that they probably can get that money if they subdivide the building and rent it out to fashion and lifestyle chains.

That means even more life sucked out of Bahnhofstrasse.

Didn't Franz carl Weber have to move out of their exclusive location a few years ago? Also I was sad when the English bookshop lost its 3 story location to a Zara? That was really sad (even if they did relocate to OrellF main store but its much smaller now)

seems the Apple store will move too as it's lease is linked to the manor/swiss life one.

Can they really though? After FCW moved out of their place, I haven't seen any other store for a long time. Is there a Lacoste there now? I am not sure.

I also do not see fashion or lifestyle stores having a lot of footfall on 4th and 5th floors.

Edit: There seems to be a co-working space for women on higher floors and is there really a Hyundai store there?

The sad thing about Orell Fuessli was that about 20 years ago they had an english section about the size of the present one in their present store. But there was an independent bookstore on Bahnhofstrasse called Staeheli, with only English books. And this was a real bookseller with high bookshelves and narrow aisles and books on virtually every topic you could imagine, not to mention highly. motivated staff who knew virtually everything about any book. So obviously nobody went to orell fuessli for English books as they went to the real thing instead.

Then that was sold out to orell fuessli who moved their own minimalist English stuff into the former Staeheli store while at the same time refurbishing it as a modern bookshop with lots of empty space and less choice. And as if things couldn’t get worse, they have now closed that down and gone back to what they had before, only there is no more Staeheli.

Or Bally to the other Zara. Many old Zurich original stores had to close/relocate as they couldn't afford increasing rents. I have to admit that it does make me sad as many childhood memories have been wiped away. But that's life, I suppose.

Franz Carl Weber was a quite complicated story: the owner, Gayoul who also owned Denner, sold the company to a French group around 2005, but he kept the house. From that point on FCW were renting the place the company once used to own. About 10 years later Gaydoul decided to increase the rent and FCW finally moved out. Gaydoul then sold the place to Swiss life (they seem to own a lot of Bhf-Strasse).

wow, the FCW saga does sound complicated. I just was informed they are still on BHStrasse so that's good.

At the same time FCW transitioned from being a really amazing and magical old-time toy store to selling mostly plastic junk. Very sad.

According to swisslife they had building permits approved for years for a 100 million renovation, I suppose the unfair thing is expecting manor to pay for all of it in 10 years. But I guess it would also be unfair of swisslife to subsidize a supermarket chain when they could make more.

They said shops in the first two floors and then offices.

One of the problems with the current building is that despite its quaint charm, it's desperately in need of a renovation. And I guess that SwissLife believes that in the long run department stores are a dying breed so they might as well refurbish it for for the type of store that is easier to find.

That said, I believe a succesful town centre shopping area thrives on different types of stores. Some to attract people in and others to make the money. Back in the 1990s there was still a butcher's shop on Bahnhofstrasse, there were at least three bookshops, there was FCW, there was a shop that sold pencils and things (at normal prices), there was a shop that sold maps and travel guides, there was a music shop. There always were loads of high end fashion stores of course, but lately they're drowning the other stuff out.

And lets face it . Bahnhofstrasse Zürich would be one of the most boring stretches of road in the world.
