I'm also keeping an eye on the ITER fusion prototype reactor, currently being built in Cadarache (FR). Fuel is Hydrogen isotopes and radiation is zero when the machine is off.

The ITER is indeed our best bet for the future of energy. In the meanwhile, I think it is a big mistake to switch off the nuclear plants. The problem of radioactive material that can be buried underneath the earth or eventually tossed into space is very manageable. The current system where Switzerland produces its electricity via nuclear plants supplemented by hydro during the peak times, and using the nuclear plants to pump the water back to the top dams overnight during off-peak demand, is fantastic. Renewables at the moment are not an option for the country; not enough sun nor wind nor renewable water sources.
