Genève VS highway in France

2020 starts with an interesting disagreement between the Canton Genève and the Haute Savoie department in France.

The French want to build a highway on the south side of Lac Léman. Genève says the new highway would: (i) compete with the recently implemented Leman Express train services that precisely links these towns, and (ii) increase car traffic and pollution in the area which was the motivation for the transboundary train services.

If the Swiss attack legally the highway project, a politician from the French side threatens to invite his citizens to block the Pont du Mont Blanc in Genève.

Controversy is served : https://france3-regions.francetvinfo...e-1773065.html

Re: Genève VS highway in France

I applaud the French - we could really benefit from a complete southside autoroute - there's a few bits of dual carriageway round Thonon and closer to Annemasse, but it still take about the same time, or slightly longer, for us to do the 80km to Geneva airport through France as it does to go the long way round via Lausanne (120km), despite the density of speed cameras on that stretch.

And I really can't see how one country could have any right to dictate road programs in another.

Re: Genève VS highway in France

The genevoise are being short sighted. A shorter (quicker) route is necessary every Friday evening and all day Sunday to take the ho-ray Henrys to and from Verbier.

The rest of the time, no need

Actually it would be nice if they would connect the rails from Annemass to Martigny as part of the leman express.

The French could invest in re-opening the "Tonkin" railway line between Evian and St. Gingolph. This would allow through trains from Geneva to St. Gingolph or Monthey (to connect to the main line) stopping at Thonon and Evian. It has already been discussed (NATO - no action talk only) but would probably be quicker to implement and cheaper than building a brand new highway. The ecological effect would also be far less...

Re: Genève VS highway in France

Wrong enemy in here. If they want a highway they should build it - and I am sure that France will build it. I am big supporter of trains, but admittedly there is also room for cars in the transport system, and in addition that cars can travel faster from/to Thonon and Evian does not necessarily mean that they are going to Geneva.

What Geneva should ask for is an investment by France to double-track all the sections of the Léman Express, as their single tracks are causing operational havoc.

it does not mater what is happening in the world, many people think they need more road to help the trafic, then there is more cars and then we need more road again.
Trains are great, thank you Switzerland.

Re: Genève VS highway in France

tbh that area has no highway link at all so I understand them wanting one.

If Geneva wants less traffic they just need to crack down on company and commercial parking with more taxes and regulations, that's entirely within the scope of action of a canton.
