SBB demands end to working from home due to COVID-19

https://www.thelocal.ch/20200610/sbb...senger-numbers

I can't believe a well funded company would so openly ask for the government to put people's health at risk in order to boost their business. Well, maybe I should. They refused to clean their trains more at the start of the pandemic, they still refuse to take additional needed measures and now this. I really wish I didn't have to use them everyday once this crisis is completely over. They won't add additional trains to avoid crowds, they won't demand masks be worn (just recommend), nor will they take any measures to ensure better safety for their customers and employees. Really disappointed to hear this.

Re: SBB demands end to working from home due to COVID-19

It's risk of health vs. economic survival. We're going to see more announcements of layoffs in almost every sector. We've now come to the time where businesses will become more vocal in order to survive.

Re: SBB demands end to working from home due to COVID-19

SBB will survive just fine, especially due to their government funding.

It is rather counterproductive, since crowded public transport is one of the biggest risks for the virus spreading, leading us into a stronger second wave which will really hurt the economy.

Rather than telling us what the shouldn’t be doing, why don’t you tell us what you think they should be doing.

Lots if jobs depend on the CFF, including transport of goods.

I think Susie Q mentioned some measures already: clean the trains more often, make sure there are enough carriages, make sure people wear masks on the train.

Thanks Roegner.

In response to your question, do you think SBB should be telling the government how to manage people's health?

The goods can still move on trains that aren't overcrowded.

The controllers can't even check if we have a ticket never mind check if we're wearing a mask.

Controllers check tickets so make sure you have one. Masks are not mandatory but I agree that in crowded trains, people should consider wearing them.

We may see layoffs at the SBB if their financial situation is dire.

True, and that's due to overcrowding. An issue that they refuse to properly deal with since even before COVID-19.

Anyway, I don't want to overcrowd this thread. Clearly I'm passionate on the subject due to repeated regular exposure to the issue.

Government funding isn't a guarantee that any deficit will automatically be compensated. The government funding that SBB gets is about specific and capped sums that are earmarked for specific projects and activities that the government deems necessary although they cannot be performed profitably. That money cannot be transferred around to other areas just because it would be opportune to do so. A loss of fare income leaves SBB out of pocket and this could mean staff being laid off, less maintenance and cleaning, ultimately less service.

Which hurts not just SBB but the entire economy.

If you use SBB and overcrowding in one sentence you've never been to London or Paris ...

Re: SBB demands end to working from home due to COVID-19

I think there is always the alternative - to drive. As much as nobody is forced to wear a mask by a government, nobody is forced to use public transport by CFF. Here the trains aren't crowded yet, seem to be regularly cleaned and those who are mindful of the virus wear a mask.

CFF is necessary, expensive and realy good compare to other public transport services elsewhere. They aslo provide a lot more than just a train ride for the community.

A rather short sited observation. I would have to drive over three hours everyday, not to mention the great expense of owning a car in Switzerland. I guess the alternative for me and many others would be to be unemployed.

The railways (and other transport companies) are getting subsidies already, as every year. This year the parliament be discussing additional state help.
Is rather the bonus of the SBB directors at stake if they don't sell enough tickets?

Beyond fuel, parking and insurance, driving 3 hours per day should kill the car resale value (depreciation).

We discussed in other threads about the possibility to do more home office hours in the future. In my job I can do 100% home office until August, but I'm going 1 day per week to the office. The SBB guy blamed the government recommendations, but what if the reduced passenger traffic is also caused by companies letting employees work from home. One of my colleagues cancelled his GA and he's driving to the office when needed.

I get it but it is hardly a CFF responsibility. Here the service is good. However not enough people wear masks in my opinion, it is not up to CFF to push them.

Re: SBB demands end to working from home due to COVID-19

Perhaps a better solution would be to require businesses to stagger their working hours. Perhaps 1/3 work 0730-1530; 1/3 work 0830-1630 and 1/3 work 0930-1730 or 20% each start at 0730, 0800, 0830, 0900, 0930 or even 10% at 0730, 0745, 0800, 0815, 0830, 0845, 0900, 0915, 0930 0945.

Same for the schools.

The problem with rush hours is everyone trying to use limited resources at the same time.

I drive one hour/day, train would be three (bus-train-bus, repeat for the return trip).

Owning a car (or four) is NOT expensive.

It is their responsibility to ensure COVID-19 safety measures that the rest of the country are required to follow are adhered to.

Perhaps it is quieter where you are, but in the busiest routes on our side of the Röstigraben, trains are packed.

Good. No immediate bankrupcy threat to CFF then.

The rest of the risk is up to us to manage.
