Another hardened criminal off the streets!

https://www.wionews.com/world/swiss-...nknotes-305005

Swiss police have investigated an eight-year-old boy after he allegedly asked whether he could use a toy banknote in a village shop.

The unnamed boy was not charged with any offence but his name will reportedly be on police records until May 2032.

Made into the Guardian.. and presumably other national media.

On the one hand...'ha, ha... those funny Swiss'... on the other hand... it highlights an aspect of Swiss society that a lot of us, and presumably a lot of natives, find frustrating.

Re: Another hardened criminal off the streets!

The police and the store have excused already to the mother of the boy because of the handling like a criminal.

The boy is frightened and refuses to visit that shop again.

Well, it certainly nips this sort of delinquency in the bud.
Actually, it is a good sign that the police have nothing better to do here. Lets hope they enjoy the publicity.

Re: Another hardened criminal off the streets!

Here the mentioned BaZ article:
https://www.bazonline.ch/polizei-erm...d-131594472193

I understand the shop clerk. But the real jerk on duty is police officer "B." His action are beyond any reasonable understanding. In my opinion this person is not suitable for police duty.

The Swiss National Banks has some guidelines about the legal reproduction of bank notes for play and entertainment use.

Quote:
Banknotes are protected by provisions in the Swiss Criminal Code (Art. 240 to 250 Swiss Criminal Code https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classifi...ndex.html#a240 ). It is forbidden to counterfeit money to pass it off as genuine, or to alter it to pass it off at a value higher than its true value. It is also forbidden to import, acquire or store counterfeit money, or to put it into circulation. Reproduction of banknotes for advertising purposes is also restricted. Reproduction and imitation must avoid any risk of confusion with genuine banknotes. Examples of reproductions which avoid the risk of confusion with genuine banknotes are listed in the Instruction sheet on the reproduction of banknotes. For advertising and training purposes, the SNB will supply, on loan, digital images with a resolution of 150 dpi with the word 'SPECIMEN' written on them. Applications, together with details of the intended use, should be sent to the following address:
https://www.snb.ch/en/ifor/public/qas/id/qas_noten#t18

Be aware that the law is the very same for Swiss as well as foreign currency and postage stamps.

Time to call the police?

Yes it does reinforce the stereotype. I mean the whole chain of command is absolutely bananas. Even the clerk or whoever who called his management let alone the police, how can you even consider doing that.

CH works on rules, common sense is not something the Swiss strive for as you could make a mistake. Reporting to the Police is always the correct thing to do so you are judged as being 'correct'.

I wonder if this mentality was the reason I left CH

Am I right that even though everyone "apologised" for the cock-up, the boy's name still remains in the cop's internal database for 10 years or so?

Not to mention the trauma it caused the poor boy, that doesn't go away quickly.

I'd like to meet the Karen working at that gas station and give her a piece of my mind...but alas, she would probably call the cops since I don't speak perfect Swiss German.

Swiss don't make mistakes so an apology would be out of the question.

That's so true. They once lost my mother's pension paid to the UK one month. It took 3 months to sort out and it was so clear it was the Swiss pension office at fault. We had all the documentation to prove it, yet they refused to apologise or even admit they were at fault, blaming the UK banking system.

Re: Another hardened criminal off the streets!

It may seem a bit of an overreaction but it was about a dubious 500 Euro note. If it happened in the USA, even for a $20 note, the cops might have asphyxiated the hapless youngster.
