There are 42000 British people living in Switzerland. | | | | | No, we prefer the theory that they were beamed up into their mother ship. | The following 4 users would like to thank Pancakes for this useful post: | |

There are 42000 British people living in Switzerland. | | | | | Doubt it. You are not quarantined by nationality but by last place you came from. | Quote: | | | | | Yes, they would.
Tom | | | | | You'd love that but nope.
PS: Anybody living in Switzerland going skiing now is having the time of their life! It must be wonderful with hardly any people there.

| | Re: 200 Brits Escape from Verbier | Quote: | | | | | Actually it isn't a quick jump. First you have to get to Martigny, then up a big, big hill up to Chamonix via both French and Swiss immigration posts. Then from there it is mostly motorway down to ... Geneva, which can be avoided with care. | | | | | In crossing over 1000 times French were only there on 2 occasions, Swiss more often but never at night.

| | Re: 200 Brits Escape from Verbier | Quote: | | | | | But who said they had to be in quarantine? Based on nationality alone?
The avid mountain-loving skiing Brit living and working «sur la Côte» or in Leysin or Geneva for instance, for the past 10, 20, 30, 40 years has no valid reason to quarantine when they pop over to Verbier do they?
I can understand the valid and important rules and quarantine for anybody arriving from the UK to go skiing here, but what about residents in Switzerland who happen to be Brits? | | | | | They were in quarantine in their hotels. It was first noticed that they had disappeared when they failed to answer calls and their uneaten meals were left outside their doors.
The quarantine was imposed retrospectively on people arriving from the UK or South Africa from 14th December.

Tom | | | | | No. If they were long time residents in Switzerland, and they went to Verbier, they would not be in quarantine just because they were British. Anyone coming from U.K. since the 14th must quarantine.

Prob had Eurotunnel & ferry reservations paid for.

| | Re: 200 Brits Escape from Verbier | Quote: | | | | | How does that work then? | | | | | Same way overstaying on a tourist visa does. If you get banned in Switzerland it applies to the whole of the Schengen area.
"Banning people from entering the Schengen is usually applied to those overstaying and working or engaging in other illegal activities. A person can be banned for a period of three years and more from entering any of the member states of the Schengen area."
Then you'd also have the problem of trying to get a visa to get back in again; something that may well affect the Brits in a few days' time as non-EU nationals.
"Even if you get back to your home country without any fine or ban, you should know that your overstaying will cause you problems the next time you attempt to enter the Schengen Zone. Immigration officers and border guards tend to be suspicious on people who overstay once, no matter in which country they were caught overstaying. Therefore, you will encounter difficulties on getting a Schengen visa or crossing the EU external borders." https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/new...student%20visa.

According to foreign news ( here Austria, therefore in German) of the 400 about 50 went straight back, officially/legally, (Klostergirls' neighbours among them?) and after the secret exodus there are less than a dozen still there. (Rechne! that's more than 200 disappeared).
Also according to the linked article they should expect a fine up to 10K franks. Corona seems more lucrative than average tourism.
And they are still looking for about 10K other Brits and South Africans who arrived in Switzerland during the time in question. So the usual "hi where are you from" and "how long have you been here" are not mere conversation these days. | Quote: | | | | | Total mystery... I know it's not funny but I can't help giggling. | | | | | I think it's funny.
I keep watching the great gap between what people babble and how they actually behave when they should put their money where their mouth is (oh hang on, they might have to now. ) and I'm flabbergasted.
They're not gonna experience a lot of love soon, I'm sure they're not welcome in France and just wait until they bring their freshly acquired corona back to the island. After all, most of them were probably healthy .... back in Verbier.
But they received honorary citizenship: They are now Verbier-Brits.

I get this is somehow an entertaining story. But then what's the big deal? Most likely they are on their way back to the UK. Who cares? That's of course unless 20mins runs a story tomorrow on how 200 Brits appear in St Moritz.
In terms of Covid spread, I am more concerned with community spread among Swiss residents (let's assume 5000 undetected cases per day), and of course what may have started to spread in the bars of Verbier, Zermatt etc before the ex-post quarantine.

And the ones in the hotels only open to guests living there. So the only spread it amongst themselves and that was already done on the plane.

No wonder the Brits flooded in Verbier, the new Magaluf.

Today was Sunday.... people will have had channel crossings home booked, that’s why they left!

No wonder the Brits flooded in Verbier, the new Magaluf. | | | | | Valais was one of the cantons who exercised the right to remain open due to the favourable infection rate in the canton. All the cantons which still fulfilled the requirements (Valais, Neuchâtel, Fribourg and Vaud) decided to close restaurants etc as of last night in solidarity with the other Romandie cantons.
