Re: 200 Brits Escape from Verbier

This report not so sensationalist.

"There are hardly any British tourists left in Verbier. They deserted the Valais station following the quarantine imposed by the Federal Council on people arriving from Great Britain and South Africa.

“We can't blame them. In most cases the quarantine was untenable. Imagine staying at four in a hotel room of 20 m2, "said Sunday Jean-Marc Sandoz, communications officer for the municipality of Bagnes, to which Verbier belongs.

Of the 420 people affected in Verbier, some left immediately, while the others took a few days to return. "It was by seeing that the meal trays remained intact that the hosts noticed that the customers were gone," said Mr. Sandoz, confirming to Keystone-ATS information from the SonntagsZeitung.

He added that, according to a survey carried out on Saturday among hosts, there would now be less than ten people affected by this quarantine in the station.

The tourists left "a little angry with Switzerland" and with the feeling of having been "trapped", added Mr. Sandoz, recalling that the British represent a fifth of the clientele of the station.

The spokesperson finally regretted the “collective hysteria” of the last few days around Verbier, as if the station was “the only one in Switzerland” to welcome the British. "According to some media, one has the impression that Verbier is going to infect the whole country," he lamented."

Re: 200 Brits Escape from Verbier

Everyone was expecting them to flee through France, so of course that was exactly what they wouldn't do.

My money is on them walking stealthily over the border into Austria, singing "Climb Every Mountain".

Re: 200 Brits Escape from Verbier

I am curious as to what are the rules?

If a country (any) offers UK citizens and residents to return to the UK, can they / could they do so, when and if, they get a flight or is the rule to first respect the full time of the quarantine and then return to the UK?

I am too. I noticed that special permission and criteria for travel to the airport were mentioned when the repatriation flights were reported (flying on 24th) which did suggest that travelling home earlier than scheduled was a breach of quarantine.

No. If they were long time residents in Switzerland, and they went to Verbier, they would not be in quarantine just because they were British. Anyone coming from U.K. since the 14th must quarantine.
No, if they arrived from the UK, they would still need to quarantine!

Arrived when? I rather doubt the authorities mean months/weeks/years ago.

That's some serious cheek:

"Some tourists later contacted their hotels to find out whether they still had to pay for the nights they had initially booked."

Revolting yet altogether predictable

Should have a EU/CH travel ban for all involved

Typical inciteful language, 'flee', 'escaped', 'under cover of darkness', 'demanded refund', etc, etc.
It's still not clear if they did break any law.
Gives the Brit haters something to chew on I suppose.

Re: 200 Brits Escape from Verbier

Curious, is it actually forbidden to leave the country (in a direct travel, same thing that is allowed when you arrive - travel to home/hotel in a direct way) when you are in quarantine?
Does anyone have any link regarding that?

I doubt it, but from the sounds of it some at least only went as far as France before they started asking about refunds/having to pay. So that ain't direct travel.

By direct travel I meant direct travel to the country border, for example "direct to the airport, not stopping in a grocery store", basically same rules for when you arrive.
My question was generic: leaving Switzerland towards any country, not necessarily going to your home country. I would imagine that from Swiss perspective it does not matter where you go? I'd expect that, even in quarantine, you are free to pack your stuff and leave the country (in whatever destination)

Yes

"You are entering Switzerland and have stayed in a country or area within the last 10 days where there is an increased risk of infection. You are required on arrival to go immediately and directly to your home or to other suitable accommodation. You must remain there at all times for 10 days following your arrival (quarantine) and contact the responsible cantonal authority within two days of your arrival (see cantonal contact details www.bag.admin.ch/entry) 2 to tell them you are in quarantine. Follow the instructions that the cantonal authority gives you."

https://www.bag.admin.ch/bag/en/home...tml#-897470613

But afterwards they changed the rules to specifically allow people to go directly back to their own country.
