Sorry but I can't imagine bus loads of Swiss skiers in Glenshee or Glencoe.
I went to Aviemore once, with my German assistant - skiing was quite good- but the town looked like a dreary Council Estate.

Re: 200 Brits Escape from Verbier

Fake news.

Quote:
Other both on and off the record calls to event organisers, photographers, friends, ski instructors, British tour operators, owners of ski schools in Verbier … all produced the same version of events: we don’t know anyone who left in the dead of night. Brits are quarantining and those very few who chose to leave did so on the invitation of the Swiss authorities.

So where did the numbers come from? Simon Wiget, director of the Verbier Office du Tourisme, told me with exasperation that it was a “miss-communication” between the French journalist who broke the story and Jean-Marc Sandoz, a spokesman for the municipality of Bagnes (which includes Verbier) who leaves his post on 31 December.

Re: 200 Brits Escape from Verbier

I think what makes me most angry about this situation is that we’ve all been told not to travel at the moment. The DM article mentioned that Covid safety measures are more enforced in Switzerland than in the UK, which may be why the Brits felt skiing in Switzerland was worth the risk.

It’s a tough situation for every party involved except for Wigmore, whose arrogance gives diplomacy a bad name.

The lead perpetrator in the DM article wasn't even staying in Verbier and, with his family, left Switzerland before the quarantine rules came into effect.
How can you leave before a retroactive rule? The quarantine was effectively in effect from the 14th as soon as it was announced on the 20th.

24 hours to leave, or finished on 24th if you arrived on 14th.

Re: 200 Brits Escape from Verbier

I wonder if the Brits fled to do us a favor, not harm or personal irresponsibility.

Retroactive anything is always a potential conflict.

I hope everyone's safe. I didn't know Verbier is such an aristocratic/new money thing. Cran Montana was packed with mobsters last season, taking selfies and wearing fur...but one could still really decently ski.

No. If they were long time residents in Switzerland, and they went to Verbier, they would not be in quarantine just because they were British. Anyone coming from U.K. since the 14th must quarantine.
Including those who reside in Switzerland but went to the UK for the holidays.

ah Crans Montana and the fur brigade, mostly from Milan. As for 'old money/new money- Wengen and the Bernese Alps, as well as St Moritz, are 'old money/aristocratic' - whereas Verbien is new money, City Boys aka Hurray Henries, lol

if you have never seen that 1987 documentary- the best part is this one, about the very popular resort of Söll, in Austria

My Grandmother spent several seasons in Verbier in the early 1950's after her husband died, plenty of old money with most of Verbier owned by 4 families.

She had lessons for over 25 years & lived in the South of France for nearly 30 years. Rather badly would be the correct answer however she was able to barter in the Butcher & Greengrocer as she said the prices were for tourists not residents.

What's barter...haggle?

Did she ski?

I saw kandahar boots the other day in Bern, they recreated the brand looks like, but only for regular boots. Still, lovely to see the name around. My folks skied on'em.

So you are following her footsteps, kinda.

Re: 200 Brits Escape from Verbier

Kandahar bindings were of course invented in St Croix, 1936- by my friend's grandfather. Info for MC who I believe lived up there for a while.

St Croix also had a massive ski jump, above the bend that goes up to Les Avattes/Les Rasses- used for national and international competitions right into the 50s. As skis and equipment improved, they had to stop it as jumpers would land right up to the main road!

Yes haggle, she tried in most shops & was usually successful.

She skied & was one of the first skiers to use a Head 'Standard' ski, probably the first 'modern' ski

So posh! Aristocrat.

I remember my family skis, woodden and crazy lookin'. I was between my dad's skis, when I was 3. On tiny ones. He'd haggle in DDR, on a beach. For a flatfish. That was as far West we got in a lifestyle.

So we found your role model!

I really dislike emojis, but we need a ski one.

I should venture out to Verbier once, but I do prefer local vintage slopes, everything is à l'ancienne, no people, no haggling.

Re: 200 Brits Escape from Verbier

History:

The first ski jumping hill of 1904 founded ski club at Swiss Sainte-Croix was located at Mont-des-Cerfs.
The Tremplin du Châble in was inaugurated in 1914 and at this occasion the local sportsman William Calame jumped a first hill record of 33 meters. For Swiss Championships in 1923 the hill was enlarged and in 1924 René Morard even landed at 57 meters. In 1930 a competition attended by thousands of spectators was hosted on Tremplin du Châble in order to celebrate a factory opening, at which Norway’s Asbjörn and Birger Ruud were participating, too. During a hurricane in 1935 the ski jump was seriously damaged and then reconstructed with a K-Point of 65 meters.
In the following decades the ski jumping hill was still busy and after a conversion in 1973 even jumps around 90 meters were possible. In 1977 the very first Nordic Junior WSC were organized at Sainte-Croix and on Tremplin du Châble. The ski jump was then still used until 1980's.

I learnt to ski between my dad's legs too - Kandahar skis and bindings, wooden, very long and no edges -leather lace up shoes, knitted socks and mitts and balaclava and tweed jacket and trousers. Once you were wet, you were wet, and it hitched to bugg***ry. Loved it.
