Well a self-inflected wound is better than one imposed from above.

I seriously doubt it will have a big impact on tourists. Doesn’t affect the men and children. And the men who impose face covering on their family members probably would be happy the women stay out of shops.

Re: Vote 7th March 2021

I wonder if it will actually be enforced...I know in Denmark it has rarely been penalized despite them also having a ban on the niqab and burqa.

Good article, Switzerland is actually a bit late to the burqa banning party:

Re: Vote 7th March 2021

I've read somewhere that an organisation is going after head scarves now. That will not pass. We'd need to ban hoodies and caps too if simply covering your hair were to become illegal.

It is a face covering ban, burka is not mentioned. But one important exclusion is masks required for health reasons.

And the vote doesn’t make it the law, each of the cantons has two years to adopt the federal provisions into cantonal law. I sincerely hope the ‘health reasons exception’ will be moot in two years time.
Heath reasons with a 'fake' medical certificate, and a mask is how female tourists have got around the law in Austria and other countries which already have a ban.

Meanwhile several hundred people gathered for "spontaneous" demonstrations against the result in Zürich and Bern.

So I guess this culture of not accepting a result has reached Switzerland too.
I voted yes on the ban, but I thinkthat in a democracy there should be space for people voicing dismay/frustration in a peacefull manner after they "lost" an election.
It's not like they are demanding a recount or are claiming vauter fraud.

Everyone else, YES. It looks like the cantons with cities voted NO. AR and GR, who knows?
The place where I have seen the most women in niqab in Switzerland was Arosa in summer. It looked like Muslim and Jewish orthodox communities were changing shifts strolling around the lake and enjoying the views with their large families. One day one community, another day the other.

Does this all mean that my lovely Shoei is now just an expensive decoration? Will Switzerland be among the first European country to sneakily ban motorcycles with the logic of no face covering allowed but helmets are mandatory?

I guess it was a good idea to get the ban in now as Islam is the fastest growing religion on the plant, before that 400000 become a million.

So more about quantity than quality? We need less religion, not more

Well when it comes to a vote it’s the numbers that matter.

Re: Vote 7th March 2021

Yes time to have a breeding competition, which religion can multiply the most and the fastest. Once the whole world and Switzerland is Muslim, then there will be peace and harmony in the entire world

Islam/religion is just like homeopathy, useless, but unlike homeopathy has better marketing behind it and even more gullible followers While you guys discuss which religion will rule the followers of the future, I will go out and catch me some Ra, the Sun God.

That was pretty much the argument against catholics for most of the last few centuries wasn't it?

I expected better from the Atlantic Sadly and as usual, whatever happens south of the Mediterranean and East of Saudi A. is unmentioned. A map of countries with a burka ban as of 2021 from the Wiki:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hijab_..._world_map.svg

From Africa I can only identify Morocco, Western Sahara and Cameroon which is right in the corner of the Gulf of Guinea. I see other red polygons but forgot the names. There's also one of the countries in Central Asia which must have a name that ends in 'stan' next to China. Geopolitics are interesting, China should be a giant red blob in the map since burkas are banned in practice, but I guess since there are no laws about it...not on the map.

I must say, I was expecting more of an international reaction over this. I remember the outcry over the Minaret ban decade or so ago! As it has been, it's barely made a ripple.

Also interesting (to me in my ignorance at least) it wasn't a Burka ban, rather a ban on face coverings... Does this mean I don't need to wear my face mask anymore?!
Because several other European countries already have bans, so it's more difficult for them to define a moral high ground.

Possibly that depends on who you chose to believe.

Islam also has a very high apostasy rate
