Biden Putin Summit Geveva 16 June

In case anyone's wanting to visit Geneva tommorrow for a mid-week jaunt, don't do it. Most of the center and lake access is cordoned off. You can't fly your drone and there's beefed up security and other restrictions in place. The Russian mission is quite the fortress.

In VD this morning there were several military helicopters patrolling the airspace, all quiet now, so they probably arrived.

According to NPR, the US wants a more stable and predictable relationship with Russia and Russia wants to show that they are taken seriously as a world power.

with a country that is not a world power, you do not look and do not care for a more stable and predictable relationship (let's say, what are the relations between US and the Thai king?).

So it is already 1-0 for Russia. And of course 98-0 for US-EU, 99-0 for Russia-EU.

They didn't even try to be sneaky, we were able to follow on flight radar. Even the plane's registration was visible.

Looks like they give way to the USAF Boeing 757 landing now in Geneva

Too bad the Geneva air traffic control feed is down, it would be interesting to hear them complain

Russians are still holding .. I guess it would be too awkward to have them arrive at same time.

Do you look for a stable relation with Thailand? If you are the USA, you do not really care for other minor nations. Yes, you consider them, but you do not put so much efforts.

Do you look for a stable relation with Russia? If you are the USA, you claim you are the only big power left, in reality you have to come down to reality and recognize that yes, you have to deal with Russia. And China. And in he near future India. And in the not so near future maybe even Indonesia. And Nigeria. And and and ...

No, not with European Union, at best you have to deal with Germany+France.

So it is already 1-0 for Russia. And of course 98-0 for US-EU, 99-0 for Russia-EU...

I was in SG when Trump met Kim and that was a big brouhaha. Someone just tweeted this which made me laugh :

"Well people, the Putin - Biden meeting was a success.
Joe made it down the stairs alright when he landed in Geneva. Nothing left to see here."

Meanwhile, most of the people in Geneva are not happy about it. They closed two of the major parks for a week and tomorrow we have been advised not to travel in the city. Cant they just do their stupid meeting somewhere else?!? Why do we have to be inconvenienced?

Exactly..... Biden is staying at a hotel just across from the UN buildings, and presumably Putin will be based somewhere similar nearby (although I read recently he's not staying planning on in the country for more than a few hours), so locking down just that small area would be more than enough. Huge swathes of the lake front and city being closed to pretty much anyone is plain ridiculous.

Perhaps they could chose Ticino or Glarus next time.... they'd be perfect!

Apparently they have RoboCops monitoring the pedestrian crossings near the train station. Screaming and yelling at people.

I disagree. It's a honor for international Geneva and neutral Switzerland to host such events. That has been part of the main fabric of Geneva for about 100 years and put Geneva on the map for major such diplomacy events. While I am not so optimistic this event will have a positive outcome, it is still a good development it is held here in my view. I think most people can tolerate a day or two of inconvenience. The Swiss authorities recommended work from home which has become second nature during recent times.

In comparison, I am more inconvenienced by a week long music festival near here where a bunch of drunk and high teenagers have their fun. Getting to/from work is such an effort that I hibernate, avoid all local businesses, and do nothing during that time. Don't complain and carry on, but if I was to have my choice of what I could be inconvenienced by it would be one of last things.

This.

Plus it's massive international multiday PR for free. Biden Kerry has been cycling through Lausanne during some Iran talks towards the end of Barry's tenure, Biden was in Davos during the WEF, and now he's even in Geneva while #1. Just like nobody knows if Geneva would be taking place as it's happening without the other two, nobody knows what may come out of this in the years to come.

Which POTUS other than Biden (now) and Trump (WEF Davos a couple years ago) have visited Switzerland while in power? Relatively speaking it's a massive plus for the federal council to have direct access to the POTUS, even if it's just a few minutes.

It's not "a day or two of inconvenience" though, this has been building for several days, and will not be over when they leave; it's going to take a couple of days at least to dismantle barricades, remove road blocks, and the several miles of barbed wire around the local parks and along the lake front. All public spaces which are being closed off although neither Putin nor Biden are scheduled to go near.

We get the music festivals too, then at least we can walk down a particular street if we want to, with this we're not being given the choice.

The vast UN building and the park next to it are more than big enough for such events, and (along with Palais Wilson on the lake front) were designed with exactly this in mind.
