The US military thinks they are living in a Tom Clancy world where {expletive deleted} never happens. But it does, over and over again.

Excuse me, I started out with a nod towards US salesmanship, albeit together with questioning Swiss gullibility.

The USA certainly still has real armed forces. However, from Vietnam to Afghanistan: a really sad story. Whatever worth the US military might have, the politics of serial US governments are more than deplorable. It looks like normal that multiple allies are thrown under the bus when the breeze shifts since quite a while.
English is my 3rd language, missed the nuance in your first post, and still cannot find the nod to salesmanship, sorry

CH diplomacy is about courting every country every once in a while. Today was the US. Only a few months ago there was a thread about how CH let China arrest chinese citizens without trouble. One of these days we'll read about how CH granted something to the EU. Repeat.

if you (or the USA) don't suck at sales, I had meant to imply the salesmanship was at least okay, good or even excellent

All 36 are single seaters. Which is equally stupid as training needs to be done in (expensive) simulators.

The Watergate Tapes, will they never go away
Personally, I doubt that the US military is to blame for policy of the respective administration. Suggest that the MIC (of Eisenhower fame) still bears looking into.

Is it a bad sign? They should buy 35 of the F-35s?

No doubt there will be soon 35, then 34, then … Flying a single engined aircraft through the alps is insanity.

Flying anything, even with more than one propulsion unit, through the Alps is insanity of the first order! Admit I’m not a pilot but would suggest flying over them is a slightly better idea.

A very serious question! Perhaps a devotee of the Kabbalah can petition Madonna to invoke a goat to act as an oracle?

Er I said through the Alps, not through an Alp. Slight difference

And yes they do fly through the alps at very low altitudes.

Its like buying a Nokia flip phone right before Apple released the I-Phone. Why bother with primitive technology when the next gen is already out in the wild.
Hell even China has one, or are very close, allegedly.

U.S Navy patent on "Craft using an inertial mass reduction device"
Aka anti-gravity UAP's. UFO's come from another planet, UAP's are made here on earth. Back engineered from an actual UFO??? Who knows?

Of course. So a bunch of recycled much cheaper planes will not hurt. It's a display. And leaves enough elbow room to send a message to R via the EU.
In contrast... Switzerland is going all eggs in one basket with shiny new planes (whichever bid they chose, btw). As for sending a message to Russia via the EU... the message is that that the EU does not matter militarily or geopolitically, but then Borrell found out embarrassingly that Russia knows that.
But hey, Switzerland is neutral. And independent militarily (presumably, previously).

Well currently, despite attrition, the Swiss air force has 54 fighters, minus 6 in the Patrouille Suisse.
I sure hope the Patrouille Suisse does not plan on flying F-35.

At USD 29,000 per hour (officially; more like 35,000 per hour in low volume), or about 3 times the cost per hour of the current fleet, the F-35 are not going to see much air.
Thankfully, since their aiframes are built to fly 8,000 hours, whereas other fighters are all built for 20,000+ hours.
But they will look cool on the apron. Unless they hide the shame in the Meiringen cave.

36? Well, seeing as the Swiss have crashed multiple F-18's in the past, I guess they're planning for some reserve stock for the coming years...

Well! It's been a while since Napolean and Hitler. But one never knows!
