Good to see that Fricktal is the most competitive region of the 4th most competitive canton!

It's an odd yardstick if you ask me.

I am sure many highly paid pros at UBS spent a lot of time on this. At the end it is an unsurprising study that shows the economic enters of Zurich, Zug, Basel and VD are indeed the economic centers.

I don't think small changes from year to year make much difference. Relocating is very expensive and corporations don't tend to relocate at a whim. Corporations are also concerned about being in an attractive location so people will want to work for them. This may offset tax and competitivity benefits to some extent. And I think it's easier to attract people to a place like Zürich with its attractions and lifestyle than to some booneys place where the sidewalks are rolled up at 8pm and the #1 cultural highlight is the fasnacht. This is why there is still a lot of R&D based in Zürich for example. But again this may vary depending on the type of employee you want to attract. If you are more into people who want to own a house and don't care much about the cultural or party scene, some of the rural cantons are indeed more attractive than ZH obviously. So it depends on the company and their corporate culture and the type of employee they want to attract.

Re: UBS Cantonal Competitiveness Indicator 2021

Setting aside the fantastic editorial introduction (probably costed two weeks of working time, i.e. about 100k francs), I find real genius in the plot at page 5.

Plotting it in absolute terms over the current "values", instead of in relative terms is pure statistical and financial genius. That would explain why UBS is performing so poorly.

If competitivity is the ratio of "fiscal income from companies" over "services that needs to be provided locally at expense of the public" yeah, no wonder, ZG has not even an airport, they are piggy-backing on the other cantons from Switzerland which is itself piggy-backing on the rest of the world.

In theory, the companies should pay the usage of public infrastructures by fiscal transfers (i.e. tax and the like)

in practice you may have the most polluting and infrastructure intensive activity of the world, such as mining companies or iron smelting, which are diverting all their profits to the swiss office in Zug where at best they the only usage of public infrastructure they incur is the postman consuming the sidewalk by walking.

Oh yes, these companies are providing well paid job locally, which will offset completely the company tax avoidance.
