Indeed. Some readers in 20Minuten wrote that it's rather sad that we even need a vote on this but looking at the red conservative communities, this is truly the most democratic way to move forward.
I'm very happy it's going through (even passed by 1% in AI), but also depressed that it's taken until 2021.

sadly, not everybody recovers - perhaps the DC tomorrow will have a scrawl "died happy" at the bottom

Nice way to put it. He probably threatens not to cook until the next vote (which this time wouldn't be all that long. )

The former, it took my focus a bit more than the other referendum

For me, it's because so many other countries have had marriage equality for many years, so it seems that Switzerland is a bit behind the times in that respect. But you know, better late than never and such.

We generally take pride in being behind the times. It is very often a very good choice.

I genuinely don't understand this. No judgement, would really like this explaining. What the benefit in waiting? It's not as if the votes are about anything faddish. Or is it a case of wait until the Beta testing is over and the dust settles?

Your question either doesn't make sense or you answered it yourself. (not faddish).

Not every fart is a good idea in the end. The Swiss system - all the procedures until it can be voted on by the population - takes a long time. What ever the subject, it goes through a long process (either Ständerat, Nationalrat, Bundesrat) or collecting signatures. All the while this is happening, the entire population is already aware of it/discussing it.

While the world thinks this is inflexible and slow, it is pragmatic. By the time the population votes, most people have gathered the information they think necessary for themselves to make a decision and nobody is taken by surprise by a voting template.

Not faddish? Suppose it does depend upon your POV a bit. Can’t imagine similar legislation being directly approved by popular vote in numerous countries between here and Australia – trying to avoid the usual labels….

Re: Vote September 26th

I agree that it's a good system, I just didn't get this from your initial post. Thanks for clearing it up.

I understand that, of course, things take time, but when you see that it got legalised in the Netherlands in 2001, Norway 2009, Spain 2005 etc, it does seem that 2021 is somewhat behind the times. Hell, we thought Britain was late to the party when they passed it in 2014! But then, am I right in thinking that Switzerland was one of the earliest places to legalise same sex partnerships...?

Either way, now it's legal and I'm happy

Re: Vote September 26th

It's not about being ahead or behind its about doing what's right. Being ahead in a terrible development is generally worse than being behind in a good development so the Swiss approach of wait and see and not jumping on fads is vastly superior.

Also don't generalize too much. With respect to euthanasia rights its Switzerland that's ahead of everyone worldwide.
