cmooon people calm down, if there is one thing to be sure about then it is that the UBS will survive, be sure about it
I used to be quite optimistic about UBS too - back in 2007:

UBS take a 4bn CHF hit from sub-prime

Quote:
Well, UBS has stacks of cash. It's not like they are about to go under as Northern Rock were.

The bank is now operating under partial nationalisation and has made absolutely massive losses.

Hockey stick? Sorry, wrong thread...

Are government schemes promoting house ownership intrinsically doomed to failure?
Obsessive Housing Disorder
Thanks for the link. I found what will likely become my favourite quote of the month.
A 1998 sales pitch by a Bear Stearns managing director advised “For a low-income borrower owning a home was a near-sacred obligation. A family will do almost anything to meet that monthly mortgage payment.”
Educated people believed that? Or anyway based their strategies & business models on that?
Talk about building houses on foundations of sand; to mix metaphors

GM 'survived' too...
Both GM and UBS are hit by crisis but I don't see such a fundamental problems in UBS, while GM has had it since long.

GM has spent decades making ****** cars and pointless acquisitions but they did not have a 'fundamental' problem - nothing that a competent CEO could not fix. They have valuable manufacturing assets, desirable brands, and design talent...

UBS, however, have lost the trust of investors. And trust is a bank's only asset. They're finished ...

I see both the US Federal Reserve & some European governments are talking about regulatory reform and new powers. What a waste of time. The existing regulatory powers were adequate - what failed in this area was firstly the regulatory agencies had insufficient skilled brave regulators and secondly what are now described as toxic assets mostly used to have high credit ratings.
What grounds does a regulator have to oppose banks buying high credit rated assets?

Stress testing, concentration limits, leverage ratio limits, higher capital adequacy requirements for illiquid assets and off balance sheet positions. But you're right, these tools don't amount to much without the clout and the spine to impose them on an unwilling audience.

Ah! The trough is open for business again

From today's Guardian
"Staff at Goldman Sachs staff can look forward to the biggest bonus payouts in the firm's 140-year history after a spectacular first half of the year, sparking concern that the big investment banks which survived the credit crunch will derail financial regulation reforms."

I read my emails in a hurry and thought that Hsiang had posted that I was a fainting goat on this thread. In fact he had only posted it on youtube but I thought it was funny so here it is- for all fainting goats who run with the crowd!:

Re: Financial Crisis Bank News [was: How Safe is UBS?]

We live in interesting times!!
From Todays FT
"Swiss central bank intervenes to weaken franc
The Swiss franc fell sharply on Wednesday after the country’s central bank intervened in the foreign exchange market to halt the currency’s rise.
Traders said the Bank for International Settlements was active in the market on behalf of the Swiss National Bank, first buying euros against the Swiss franc and later buying dollars against the Swiss currency"
Hope the Swiss Central bank has deep pockets....
CHF fell by about 2.5 rappen versus euro, now recovered by 0.5 rappen so 2 rappen down; circa 1.520

Looks as if there in fact will be even more federal government money in UBS, based on the old comradeship or Messrs Villiger and Merz. It however in the end may lead to a merger with either CS or a German or French bank. CEO of the Deutsche Bank AG is Mr Ackermann, a former UBS (SBG) employee ...........
