Tennis legend Roger Federer announces his retirement

Well, the time has finally come and the inevitable has happened. A legend has lost the battle against time and their body and an era has come to an end. Universally admired, they showed true humility in their work and changed the lives of countless people and most of all represented their country flawlessly.

Ladies and Gentlemen, a minute's silence please for King Roger, who has announced his retirement today.

Re: Tennis legend Roger Federer announces his retirement

I've met him a couple of times (well, "met" as in "been part of the crowd") at the local tennis club where he came to give out prizes at the kids' tournament. He's a lovely guy and stayed on to have a knockabout with the kids, signed tennis balls, t-shirts and stuff. Always seemed surprised that people wanted stuff signing, which was quite sweet.

Re: Tennis legend Roger Federer announces his retirement

A legend and a great sportsman. Hope he will be fit enough to play some veteran matches every now and then.

With 19 year old Carlos Alcatraz as new number 1 and Federer retiring, it's really a new era in tennis.

It's appeared overdue for at least a couple years. Rafa seems to be in a similar situation now.

Rafa won a major a couple of months ago. You’re a hard man to please!

Oh my, they don't have to do that (even if sometimes it really looks like they're gonna....grow lumberjack beards on tennis courts). Speaking of Federer, he was actually due to retire for a couple of years already. I think it was the old rivalry and "who's gonna win more GS tournaments" with the other two...ahem, kings, that has prevented him from retiring so far.

For his numerous fans he'll still be the best tennis player they have ever watched no matter how many GS tournaments he has won. I'm happy he thought about his physical (and mental) health too and finally took the right decision.

(I know it was a joke )

I'm thinking more of the issues he has to deal with. Foot, bellymuscles, and whatnot. At some point drugs start to do more harm than good.

Around a dozen matches played since February 2020. Not really breaking news...

Or abdicate? At least a good luck message to Nadal and Djokovic to keep the rivalry going.

I‘ve heard a 5 mile queue to shuffle past his home is planned.

That's not going to work is it? The Swiss don't really know how to queue!

I literally got into a spat over this getting coffee yesterday … the nerve of some people, especially when caffeine is concerned.

I will miss Roger deeply, he’s the reason why I play and love the sport.

A great piece on his art:

I don’t think that is right. Provided that it is made clear that queueing is expected and visual clues provided, like temporary barriers, the can and do line up just like the brits. Of course there are always some that attempt to jump the queue, but they are probably frontaliers, or expats.

You mean that unless specifically told to queue up, rather like you would with children, they are just going to push and shove to the front?
