New capital of Switzerland (VOTE)

What the hell is that all about? Is this just an informal SMS poll or is there going to be real vote later?

Quote:
In Switzerland, a mystery grassroots campaign is conducting a public SMS poll for a new capital.
Come on Zurich! Basel as capital would be such a shame. In my view it should be 1-Zurich 2- Genf 3-Bern.
Can someone throw more light on this poll?

Compared to the other cities Basel looks very grey and not as pretty to me. Zurich and Genf have lot more going compared to Basel. Nothing personal against Basel. I live in this country so I would prefer the capital to be a cool place that sells my adopted country to the rest of the world Bern to Basel would be a step down.

Anyway is there going to be real vote on this and is the capital really going to be changed?

Haha don't worry i'm not originally from Basel. It's true that it is an industrial place here. Surely not as picturesque as the other cities.

The vote is not official and the organisation behind the campaign is unknown. Nevertheless it's quiete interesting to see how the people react.

Re: New capital of Switzerland (VOTE)

Hi,

I think it is a bit of fun or a viral advertising campaign. If they did change the capital then anywhere but Zurich would be good and Basel would certainly be a good choice. I have live in Basel for nearly 18 years and I find it a place where it is easy to be accepted to live as a foreigner and a much more friendly place than Zurich.

I have to travel to Zurich frequently for work but as they say about Zurich the two good thinks about Zurich are that it has a lake and a good railway station with fast links out of Zurich.

No sure why it would be a shame for Basel to be the capital though I think it would be a shame if "downtown Switzerland" became the capital.

Have fun

Martin

Advertising is in a seasonal slump, so the Media sellers need to generate interest in something to use as an example to their clients that - guess what? - advertsing works.

Filling space, expensively.

Re: New capital of Switzerland (VOTE)

Clearly the new capital should be somewhere in Ticino, because our weather is better.

I vote for Manno, because putting it in Massagno would make my rent go up.

I'd discount the French and Italian regions as they have. Website only in German

Besides, Manno is a dump

Re: New capital of Switzerland (VOTE)

Oh please let the capital city go elsewhere apart from Bern.

Bern = Capital = More Tax

It's an advertising gimmick!

Re: New capital of Switzerland (VOTE)

Due to a military fact, it's better a very inner city to put as country's capital.

Basel and Geneve are borderline cities. In case of a big unrest in a neighbour country, those cities would run in trouble.

An inner city is easy to defend like Bern and Zürich.

As "Bernois" as I am, I'm glad with our glorious current capital where we have the fantastic Confederal Parliament building.

Let's root for Bern!!!

Re: New capital of Switzerland (VOTE)

how about Interlaken ? they have a Hooters Restaurant and it would make a great Parliament as the politicians wouldn't have far to go for fun

and up there in the mountains the Swiss Army would be able to defend it easy - face it thats what they go off on manouvres for every year isn't it ?

As much as I like Geneva, I'd vote for Zurich or Basel.

I guess you do not need to worry as probably no country would go so far as to change their capital city - in his case they would lose their reliability

Not really being a brummie... (No I don't have the accent!)

Don't take this the wrong way.

60m odd UK population, 53m are outside London. Which means Londoners are in a minority. I do agree London should be the capital however......

I'm personally sick of London being shoved down our neck.

Yes the transport system is good when it's on time, but the majority of the place is a overpriced polluted sh**hole, which would be first be nuked in the event of a nuclear war.

Where the city types live the high life on 12k bonuses and everyone else suffers as they buy up the city. Saying that there are comparable bad areas in any city.

WTF rebuild Wembley? The new national stadium should have been built somewhere centrally between Newcastle and Southampton, with good transport links.

Anyway it will happen soon enough when the sea level rises due to GW??? and London floods.

Saying this Birmingham has it's fair share of tornados recently.

Not really so much of argument in Switzerland, as it's smaller I'd say keep it as is, so Bern.
