In what way is placing the highest level of trust imaginable in your god, "testing him" ?

I should add that this verse speaks of throwing down the gauntlet and challenging God.

In Malachi 3:10, it says "Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it"

Jacob wrestled with God, and Gideon threw out a fleece to re-confirm what he already heard.

My point is, it is permissible to ask questions of God. It is permissible to verify one's understanding.

Phos, if there is a God then I don't think that it would want you to spend all your time obsessing about it, but rather live your life. I should know, I am an expert in procrastination

So guys, I see the discussion got cooler and a bit distracted from the Bus!

In order to warm up the debate, here it goes:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009...ian-complaints

And their slogan in UK is:
"There definitely is a God. So join the Christian party and enjoy your life."

Now we definitely expect they prove the word of "definitely" !
To me they'd better written as "Definitely maybe" :msntongue::cool:

Not sure what you believe any more?

After over 1000 posts here many could easily be confused. Why not try the "Belief-o-meter" - a multiple choice quiz that will tell what, if any religion you should follow. I am happy (and relieved) to report that I have least compatibility with the Jehovah's Witnesses.

(apologies if someone has already posted this link. I simply can't be ar5ed to go through the entire thread)

A taste of Christianity 2.0

Im sure this post is now offically flogged to death, and although it goes against my stated belief that I dont believe in God personally, an award today for a quantum scientist for the message of religion within science:

So it's not bad to be like Sr. Templeton: Making big money out of bloody materialistic stock market and then intensify spirituality using it!

Sir Templeton is no longer living in the material realm.

I'm surprised no one is trying to debunk Bernard d'Espagnat as a non-scientist. What happened to all the die-hard Newtonians?

I can hear voices
Now, for some background, I'm an audiologist. Basically, all these shrivelled up, creaking and groaning old people come to me when they have problems with their hearing. We fit hearing aids, they can hear their bowels voiding into their colostomy bags again, joys all round.

However, we occasionally get people in who are a bit loopy. Such as the old nutter that decided his hearing aids let him hear God

I'm not taking the ****, this guy came in for a follow up and told me he could hear God through his hearing aids. I'd fitted him with them, and when I'd seen him the first time he seemed "fairly" sane. In that he wasn't undressing himself in front of me or asking me where the goblins come from (this has happened on more than one occasion - Devon, tch).

So he came in, sat down and said "Yeah, great, I can hear much better, but I can hear God now"

Riiiiiight. I proceed to joke with him that no hearing aid is that good, but he's not pulling my leg, he was deadly serious. Hmmmmmm

I asked him a few questions - What does he say? All the time? Can you hear any other deity or religious figure.

I just couldn't figure it out. I was in the process of referring him to a psychiatrist, checked his details, and then looked at his address. The Old Vicarage

"You don't by any chance live next to a church do you sir?"
"As a matter of fact, I do, why?"
"Because you are tuning into the sermons through your hearing aid, thats why*!"

Turns out he was telling the truth the whole time. Shows how much I think of religion I guess, I just assumed he was a crackpot.

*For the technical amongst you, he was on a loop system setting, which meant he was hearing what the church was broadcasting on their induction loop system.

I trained in audiology, the switches on the back of the hearing aid are almost impossible for arthritic fingers. They go to change the volume and switch onto T loop and if there is a loop system in the area sometimes think that they are hearing things.
