How do you practice knife fighting without actually killing your buddy?
Don't train with your buddy...

A knife for some serious self defense looks in my books a bit different than your usual cheese/apple/yarn/you name it cutting pocket knife. I basically use it most often as a screwdriver and eating device.
That's true, most people overestimate the damage a small knife does on the torso. You can literally get stabbed dozens of times in your chest without dying (in most cases). Sure, it's not something to rely on, but having lived in countries where knives in fights are much more common than here they are hardly ever lethal unless of a certain lenght.

Defending against a knife is something you can train for but it's based on the premis that the attacker is inept basically. Plus much of what's taught is wishful thinking even then.

Martial arts can be a great hobby, and some sensible self defense training can be useful, but ... Well, but. That's how I see it.
That's the difference between martial arts/self defence and fighting sports, one assumes the opponent is a drunken brawler with low reflexes and no training, the other doesn't.

Re: Self Defense in Switzerland

Some more tips on self-defence ... although, sadly, they never even get to pointed sticks.

The reality is a knife is a lethal weapon and doesn't have to be projected into the body, a slit here or there is enough. If you see a knife - run, run away, every martial arts guy will tell you to do so.

I second this. I've done Kung Fu but I still cooperated with some thugs who had cornered my brother, close friend, and I with machetes. Having a go puts your life much more in danger than cooperating would. Your phone, wallet and its contents are replaceable; your life is not.

Re: Self Defense in Switzerland

Running away is surely the best defense, if you are able to. If you ask about your right to defend yourself and legal weapons, it is interesting to know that for instance pepper sprays and a katana sword are not considered as weapons
Hopefully you won't be tempted to carry a japanese sword, but a pepper spray is not a bad idea and compatible with running away. Lots of people carry them with themselves.
Check the brochure on the use of weapons in Switzerland (from Baselland, but it is basically the same for all of Switzerland, I believe... http://www.baselland.ch/fileadmin/ba...affenrecht.pdf
