I was in Wengen once skiing & stayed for a night & it didn't seem dangerous in any way to me as everything in the village was in close proximity. Even a short walk out of the village wasn't hazardous in any way, still a mystery though...
I do not think about "hazardous" but simply about something went wrong

I have some friends from the UK staying up here on Flumserberg and when they arrived last night, before I even read this story, I told the 3 teenage sons to be very careful walking back to their hotel at night from the clubs. Late nights, booze, icy roads and -15 and lower temperatures can be very dangerous.

It's not looking good for the guy and I can't imagine what his family and friends must be going through.

Just remember that this thread could be found by them through Google now (I'm sure some of them will be searching for background info - anything that might help) so please keep a lid on any morbid speculation.
> difficult to imagine what his family and friend now are going through, true
> but is it correct to withhold reality from them ? I fear, reality will arrive very soon

Re: Missing Brit 'disappears' in Wengen..

Very brief note on the French version of 20 minutes: Un corps découvert à Lauterbrunnen. States that a body (not yet identified) was found in "Lauterbrunnen". I put the locality in quotes, as it is not clear whether they are referring to the village or the commune, and Wengen is in the commine of Lauterbrunnen.

Stay tuned, as they say.

Re: Missing Brit disappears in Wengen (Update: Body found)

Terrible shame. To lose someone this young and in these circumstances must be devastating.
I do hope that this was simply a case of misadventure and nothing sinister happened to him.

Re: Missing Brit disappears in Wengen (Update: Body found)

By feeding the location that 20min says the body was found into Google Earth it seems quite clear that he fell to his death, indeed exactly as 20min are reporting

Poor devil.

In this image Wengen is to the right, just out of the view. Location of the body is given by the yellow pin.

So sad....I feel for his poor mother & family, how his family holiday in such a beautiful place could end like this is tragic.

Really quite awful. The holidays just make it that much harder when dealing with tragedy like this.

Re: Missing Brit disappears in Wengen (Update: Body found)

I just heard on the news that the police are listing the official cause of him falling as drunkenness his blood alcohol level was 2 per mil.

Just found this 20min article too.

Be careful while celebrating the new year.

It's not the first time this sort of thing has happened.

Rachel Ward died in January this year walking home with too much alcohol inside her.

No, and it has happened again and again for decades, and when police starts to talk a certain "language" you know that they have a very clear idea and expect to get clear within 48 hours. Generations have changed, TV and Internet were introduced, but this pattern remained unchanged.

The problem in the mountains is that many "cliffs" are porousous and can break away within seconds. This is why the Alpen-Club each years renews its fencings and tries to keep people off trespassing, as behind their "lines" the ground can get down in a moment.

I still remember our teacher in 1961-63, Mrs Eickhoff, in order to demonstrate the danger, went accross the fence, kept herself to the fense and her right foot stamped onto the ground, and some 50 centimeters of "ground" departed downwards. She krept back and told us "this is what I wanted to say. Any questions ? I am now available in that restaurant up there. You now know that you simply are to keep inside the marked terrain. Meeting is ...."
