I recently moved here and was amazed at how much people smoke, I hope it's reduced even more soon!

Most smokers here are women from Kosovo, Albania, Macedonia, Greece, Croatia and Spain

AND this is NOT an exaggeration but a daily observation

Almost 20% of the women in CH smoke daily.

BfS says in 2011 a total of 98'665 women were from those six countries, that's less than 1.3%. That's 6-7% of all women smoking daily.

Well- excellent news. The ban on smoking in public may have worked, with other factors involved perhaps. Only 7% of 15 year olds smoke regularly now, as compared to 12% four years ago. Excellent news re alcohol too, only 10% of boys of that age drink at least 1x a week, whereas the figure was 27% four years ago. For girls the figures have gone from 13& to 6%- so a massive reduction overall in such a short time.

Not sure exactly which factors come into play- but perhaps one positive effect of the fact kids spend more time playing on the internet, than socialising in the street? Whatever the reasons here- the figures are very encouraging- hurrah. I hope even the smokers here will agree it is good news for our youngsters.
But how many of those are smoking pot? More than those 7% I'd guess.

Methinks marijuana is becoming the new tobacco.

Same problem, different drug.

Sure, BUT a definite majority of smoking women either do not speak German or with a revealing Accent. I regret to help the Blocherites

Ha, never smoked in my life. Started smoking when coming to CH 3 years ago, now leaving felt a need to quit. Could it be possibly be climate here that encouranges smoking? or relatively law tabacco prices?

Bullshit.

Most of my girlfriends have been native German speakers (even in the US), and ALL have been smokers.

Re: a disaster for the smoking lobby

According to BFS (the Swiss government bureau of statistics), more men than women smoke in Switzerland. I couldn't be arsed to search on my phone for historical statistics on the prevalence of smoking in Switzerland, but I'd happily bet that Wolli's wrong there, too.

Re: a disaster for the smoking lobby

Please don't blame foreigners for smoking – the amount of foreigners we have in Australia is extremely high and yet our smoking levels are right down. The amount of people smoking here blows me away everytime. I see old Swiss women continuously buying smokes – I was pretty surprised to see an old lady with her greys walk up to the counter and request a 10-pack of cigs at Kiosk. She spoke Swiss German pretty well; she was definitely Swiss.

I mean Switzerland definitely has a smoking issue and there is no denying it. I'm not sure about other countries but in Australia, smoking is illegal in schools, restaurants, cafes, public parks, bus stops & train stations – you will be fined by police. Government also has huge taxes on smoking to stop it.

Yet at my Gymnasium in ZH, the only outside areas are all smoking areas and there's even branded umbrellas "Kantonsschule B** Rauchenzone... it's almost like us non-smokers get discriminated here.

that the number of men Smoking apparently dropped in recent years to below 20% would be good. But it is women who give birth

You have to take it the other way round. Why are specific ethnic groups smoking more here than in their countries of origin ? Why do many local Swiss strongly oppose to Sheesha Smoking but find chain-smoking a perfectly normal social behaviour ? What is the WEBsite of Kantonsschule-B ?

While Smoking is permitted here in public parks and at bus stops and Train stations it IS banned in cafes and Restaurants

Embarassing is that Station Areas covered and semi-enclosed are regarded as "open-air" --- a definite Problem

************************************************** **********************************************

Nobody denies that there is a "Smoking issue" and everybody knows that more cigarettes per capita are produced here than in most other countries. And that some countries get their cigarettes supplies from Switzerland.

************************************************** ***************************

Overkill ? Yes, I DO have an issue with the anti-Smoking scare-mongering anti-Smoking Propaganda from the government side. Which not only failed but by making the smokers into freedom-Lovers SUPPORTED Smoking. The same applies to the Lungenliga who in their last federal law-proposal with its centralist anti-federalist Contents helped the Smoking Lobby.

You do realise that the people at bus stops are not representative of the whole population of Switzerland don't you?

It is quite possible that more than 20% of women who wait for buses smoke ( and I'm not truly convinced by that) but you can't extrapolate that the mean that more than 20% of women in Switzerland in general smoke.

In Wolli's world taking the bus leads you to smoking.
