While it of course, as everything in the army, is subject to individuals, I saw it too often for comfort. And since the moment you became captain you were ways ABOVE the level in question. Not so very long ago a cousin and me asked some nephews about the Topic and while we had hoped things had improved were told that the problem is still alive. No, it IS "the army" in practice at least

*SOME" individuals ? Rather most individuals in the rank of CORPORAL and even many in the rank of lieutenant. --- AND to me corporals ARE THE army

Re: a disaster for the smoking lobby

I can confirm what Wolli says. Having served from the mid-80s thru the mid-90s, I'm not sure if this still applies to today.

Small breaks were rather uncommon unless someone asked for a smoking break, which were always granted if timing was reasonable (say, 1.5-2hours since the last break).

Non-smokers indeed were at risk of being ordered to do some minor task, while showing the lit cig amounted to an virtually unconditional right to refuse following the order. As most everybody tried to avoid work there was a clear incentive to light one, which turned many into smokers, former occasional smokers and non-smokers alike.

When I did the Rekrutenschule it was common knowledge that those males that served and hadn't started to smoke by the end of RS, they almost certainly wouldn't ever.

To my luck, many of the corporals of those days did not understand English and so did not see that my Financial Times was a week old ---- and for the whole RS served as my cigarette.

What about office workers who take smoking breaks? It really annoys me that some people, after the coffee break, go for a smoking break while I go back to work!

That's human behavior. Who are working the 8h rly full time. One will go smoking, another will have a smalltalk or surfing on internet for privat matter. As long the work is done, it shouldn't matter. (I'm a non smoker ;-) )

Re: a disaster for the smoking lobby

So what is up with anti-smoking lobbies. The first thing I noticed when arrivng in this beautiful country is that so many people still smoke here. Like going back in time!

Smokers are almost always a irritation to there surrounding.
1. their smoke does not stick to their bodies, it is detectable by and annoying to hundereds of people passing by.
2. Only 1 in 1000 does not throw their garbage (yes sigarettes are garbage) on the streets.
3. The in need a sigarette so I take a break argument.

How can we support Anti-smoking in Switzerland?

TELL smokers your opinion- Also tell the non-smokers majority that you are NOT a smoker --- as peoplr here regard NL folks as smokers

Speaking of opinions...

I am happy to no longer be a smoker (in my third year now!), for myself, my health, etc., but when I hear/read the opinions of some hard-core anti smokers, quite frankly I wish I was still a smoker just for the pleasure of telling them to f* off with a smile.

Funny thing is, I was much more tolerant of anti-anti when I was a smoker. Now they just make me mad.

Cheers! (popcorn and all)

Same, except that I'm in year four.

If anything, anti-smokers should work to outlaw advertising for tobacco products and related brands instead of getting agitated on the individual. This time around such a referendum might succeed.
