Blocher knows that HIS candidacy might re-unite the other political factions in Berne against him.

BDB has been a successful businessman long enough to know that you do not have to be at the desk where the decisions are signed, it is enough if you are at the desk where the decisions are MADE ! And as he already has with Mr Maurer one ally inside and with Mr Rime another one to be inside the coalition, he knows that he does and will have all the influence possible, while leaving the hard work to others.
We have to elect parliament in 2011. The reaction of Blocher and the other parties will depend on the outcome of the election. And by leaving the hard work to others he automatically leaves the merits to others. And you expect this reaction from a man who pushed a absolute nobody like Tony Brunner for party president?
But much more interesting is that CVP and BDP are talking about putting their forces together.

This is indeed very interesting as it would mean a clear move of the BDP towards the centre. A CVP/EVP/BDP block would become strong enough to keep 2 seats in the Coalition. So that the SVP in that case may be up to attack either FDP or more likely the SP, depending on the political situation in autumn 11

.
Define "absolute nobody" please. Brunner stems from the exact farming community and traditionalist background that many conservative voters also herald from. He may be young and relatively inexperienced as opposed to other party leaders, but he's no vacuum.

I have listened to Brunner on a few occasions and I am afraid to say he is a bit of a gobsh!te.
And he looks like my brother-in-law....

He is his masters voice. I doubt very much that he is able to say one single sentence without the approval of BDB.

... or they find themselves in the splendid isolation called opposition. No, wait they tried that before and it didn't work.

Mrs Widmer-Schlumpf sits on a SVP seat, and is as far right as the SVP. FDP and CVP (plus allies) together have far more seats than SVP and BDP together, so that them having 3 seats is justified.

Widmer-Schlumpf is not as far right as the SVP, nor has the BDP shifted towards the centre.

BDP equals Widmer-Schlumpf - and WS' political positions change accordingly what would be beneficial for her to stay in power.
At present she's just teamed up with the CVP as she was keen to grab the finance departement, which will keep her in the BR for another legislative period. So in exchange, today she had to back up the CVP to get them the UVEK, against the will of the SP...

Christian Levrat ist sauer

We remember which party, ironically, was the initiator of the 2007 plot - life sucks, Christian!

Well, the Romansch speakers, less than 3% of the population, are practically represented by the Grischun politican Widmer-Schlumpf !
Read today in La Quotidianna:

Quote:
Superbis d'avair ün cusglier federal in cumün
Il cumün da Guarda ha gnü specialmaing motiv da festagiar l'elecziun da Johan Schneider- Ammann sco cusglier federal: Sia duonna chi ha ragischs a Guarda posseda qua nempe chasa e fuond.
Proud to have a federal cancelor in the village
The village of Guarda had especially good reason to celebrate l'election of Johan Scheider-Ammann as federal cancelor: because his wife, who has roots in Guarda, owns a house and fields there.

Rumantsch well represented. Ticked.
