The French and Germans still rule over you thanks to Guillaume, Hanover, and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Who are the losers?

Now get back to your integration classes!
DB, will you explain the concept of the ceremonial position of a constitutional monarch within a Parliamentary Democracy or shall I?

Re: English as an Official Language

Totally agree Tom. One of the reasons I went to UK was to see Hendrix and others at the isle of Wight. But that does not mean English should become a Swiss National language. Amazing how Jagger still totally got it - but Johnny, oh dear. French rock is an embarrassment to say the least.

Well, personally I think most languages don't work well for rock music, other than English and Italian (I LOVE Italian hard rock). French is particularly bad! (let's face it, Johnny Holiday is as good as French rock gets!)

For Italian, Vasco, Nek, Spagna, Ligabue, Litfiba are all favorites (saw Litfiba in Lugano last November).

Tom
I don't mean to be rude, but there is more to music that rock. I respect your taste. My kind of music is very "niche" for highly unrocky people. I won't even say names.
By the way, if you get hold on a CD of Bubbi Morthens, Icelandic, buy it. Blind. Any price. Icelandic, and not only rock.

You are right, Google translate is so much fun- a bit like those translations from Japanese for your latest electronic gadget

Yes, there is also Blues!

I'll have to try the Bubbi dude. The only Nordic music I normally listen to is Madrugada (N) and H.I.M. (SF) (but they sing in English)

Well, obviously, we are in a situation where you'll hate what I like and i'll hate what you like. Send me the Bubbi Morthens CD if you find one, you missed many of my birthdays anyway

It's like telling a non-French person that Serge Gainsbourg was a genious. They google it, click like mad on youtube and get this outraged huge question mark of a facial expression for the rest of the week. So don't google it.

In all due fairness, I don't think it was English speaking troops that marched into Berlin in May of 1945...

Yes, as you have just proven with your picture, it was Russian speakers who conquered Berlin. US troops conquered Saxonia before handing it over to Soviet control in exchange for West Berlin. The final division details were ironed it in the Potsdam Agreement.

Next time I go to Norway, I'll look.

But are you male or female? My girlfriend will bitch if I buy presents for girls! (though, as she speaks no English, she'll never know!

I am not jealous, but I am male. Don't worry, I get my CDs from my dealer in Reykjavik.

Btw, the fact that your wife does not speak English is proof that English is not world language: it missed one person.

All the FUN people!

Really, English really isn't important to my life at all.

Tom

Of course English isn't important to your life ... thats why you are writing on the English forum and thats why you are writing in English .... if you are really from the US and native English then its a shame you think that way. Are you a closet Swiss by chance?

Thanks for stating the obvious. I mentioned this a couple of pages ago ! These are two completly different discussions.

When I was at school in the motherland back in the last century when passports were BLACK, French was compulsary, then German was an option. So its quite common for English people to have some knowledge of these languages already.

I think Swiss people could learn a lot about intergrating with the outside world if we allowed them to adopt our superb language! I think English as a 5th official language is a benefit to the SWISS, people are so inward they are not seeing the benefits.

I await my groans and personal insults before I go out and wave my flag on Zurich day..... Amen
You miss the point :

A) as I proved above, English has been adopted as the FOURTH "traffic language" by the Federal administration, and as MAIN language by the Federal Civil Aviation Authority
B) Ask any Swiss citizen for either Identity Card or Passport, and check the details and you will find that English IS language nr 5 on these fairly important documents
C) In schools in the Canton of Zurich (just one example), English and French in school start right together, and in some Cantons, English even before French.

So, the changes you speak about as something of the future have happened between 1950 and 2005.

And Switzerland integrating with the outside world ? Here a list of just a few of the organisations of which Switzerland is member :

E.F.T.A
Council of Europe
United Nations,
Schengen / Dublin agreements Area -- Associate
CEPT – Conference of European Postal + Telecommunications administrations
EBA --- European Broadcasting Union / Eurovisison
ECAC – CEAC – European Civil Aviation Conference
EUROCONTROL, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation
CER -- Community of European Railways
Europäisches Patentamt – European Patent Office - -
-- Office Européen des brevets

All of the above.

I am from the US, but am no longer a US citizen.

I didn't come here expecting to live my life speaking English, and I never have. Italian is currently the main language at home, French/Italian at work, all of the above among my friends.

But why is it a shame? If I felt English to be important to my life, I'd move to an English speaking country! It's not, so I don't. If it is to you, why don't YOU move?

Tom

Hardly, but I DID vote for him (and Boradori) on Saturday!

Tom

P.S. My daughter who just turned 18 voted for the first time, and selected the 'no-vote' option.

With your own logic: You are so inward, you are not seeing that it is not a question of benefits.

Nobody wants a world without English, and nobody wants a world with only English either. Now you may replace "English" with any language or animal of your choice. Have fun.

P.S. And I don't give out groans.
You are correct lets ban English being used in Switzerland and send all inward English speaking foreigners back to where they came from 2 by 2 along with Noah and his ark ...........

No, just ship them all to Australia, as they did in the good old days!

Or make them walk the plank, one by one.

Oh, and being of Irish ancestry, 'English' is not a nice word!

No point missed the world is far bigger than Europe, what the hell are these organisations anyway?? tin + pot , although EBA that gets my vote null point !

I am not the one banning anything, I am fine with English and quite a few more. You are the one banning languages from your life. You are the one begging us to use English in your life in this country, we, the multilingual, are just giving alms to the ones in need.
