Oh Dear...I'm scared. Are you one of those "talented foreigners?" I think Switzerland could replace you if they needed to. But of course you want to continue to live here, but hate it too. Two-faced I call it. You shouldn't be a Swiss Citizen because you are not for Switzerland, why should they give it to you? I understand more and more now the Swiss centiment towards "uber priviledged" foreigners.

I don't hate switzerland, i even care for it more than you do. For you such a vote is great, to me this is giving this country an image it does not deserve.
I applied for swiss citizenship last year and I'm going to get it in a few weeks. The "centiment" of the swiss officials I met during this process is at the opposite of your Gollum attitude.

And as tempers rise and fingers dash all over the keyboard to prove another point, minds become closed. This does not help anyone.

Demonstrations involving damaging goods will not help.
Yelling at each other will not help.
And the Swiss will not overturn this initiative outcome willingly.

Obviously many of you are using this forum to vent. Rightly so. That's what it's here for. But please listen to both sides and we'll all be taking a step forward.

(And I'll step off my preacher's box. Good night everyone.)

It's quite amazing though the number of expats who, when asked how long they have been in Switzerland answer "too long". But when you ask them why they are still here they answer "and where would we go?". The fact is that despite the "difficult Swiss", Switzerland offers a high standard of living, good healthcare, good infrastructure, etc, etc. There is a price to be paid for everything and there are many expats who are willing to pay that price to stay here.
good health-care?...please tell me you're joking..for the price you pay...LOL

You see, so the Swiss are not the "xenophobic" fools that many of you are making them out to be. Good for you, and good luck hope you get it.

Cute...oh well another one bites the dust. Just admit you've been defeated and call it a day. This is the usual reaction (the troll defense) when you have nothing more constructive to say. Switzerland 100-Foreigners 0. Okay I'm being cynical. Don't let Switzerland itimidate you, they also respect strength. Act like you have a right to be here, foreigner or not.

Re: What if? Consequences of expulsion initiative being accepted?

I'm being honest: havent read the whole thread (35 pages!)

But. what exactly is wrong with that initiative? If I understand it right, all it sais that you loose the right to settle here when performing a criminal act. Nothing about racism. Everybody non-swiss is touched by it.

Arent the swiss in their right to keep their country as safe as possible. I wouldnt mind if my nabour appears criminal being kicked out. I guess they would as much do that to swiss citizens if they could. I really dont see whats wrong with trying to get as much criminals out of your country. Why would you want to keep them? As a foreigner I dont feel at all insecure by this, actually it makes me feel more secure. Actually, given the amount of foreigners I think the swiss are very friendly to foreigners, just they prefer the foreigners that add to the country, who can blame them for that?

On the news I see people demolishing things, what do they want: keep the criminals in?

I guess Im missing the point here cause so many people are upset over this... Someone enlighten me?

Yes, but theres "tons" more foreigners waiting to come in! Switzerland doesn't have a problem to find people who want to live and work here. Don't forget that. The point is "any of us can leave Switzerland and Switzerland will survive just dandy"...just the way it is.
Those foreigners waiting to come here are the kind of foreigners Swiss people are not quite fond of ...I imagine most of the people in the Western world are quite happy to live in their own countries... Being a foreigner is tough, no matter what you'll do and how well integrated you are you will always be a foreigner, a "not quite one of us"... And if the things deteriorate here there will be a echo, be sure about that.
What gives me hopes is the fact that the initiative was voted only by 53% of the voters. It could have been worse..

This is your "crushed egos" leitmotiv that you keep repeating in this thread and other threads as well. I don't know of any person who had the ego crushed. What i find disturbing is the sick rejoicing you seem to draw from this alleged "crushed" egos. You have this schadenfreude attitude that can only be derived from a failure in your life.
You need to face it, switzerland needs talented foreigners as there is not enough talent in switzerland. Switzerland and its SVP needed foreign countries like Spain, Italy, Germany to get 2 poor swiss out of Lybia after the politicians failed miserably. We are going to make this place a better place be it through naturalisation or protesting and improving things. You better resign yourself to it.
"enough talent" ? Ever considered that the UBS now is lead by a German and the Deutsche Bank AG by a Swiss. It was Switzerland which was helped by Italy, Germany and Spain. It was Switzerland and its SP, FDP, CVP and SVP to solve the Libya crisis (Libya has the Y behind the ..b..). Switzerland usually is the one who helps out other countries out of sh.., so this was a change for once. 10'000s of Swiss work in countries around the globe and deliver "talent" to an out-of-Switzerland-world apparently not having enough talent locally and so in need of Swiss talent. Some Latin American heads of state like Messrs Kirchner of Argentina, Eduardo Frei in Chile, etc (Ecuador for example) were of Swiss origin. A man of Swiss origin was Vice President at Boeing for many years, a man from Zurich was President GM Europe for many years, the son of the Swiss couple named Huber became US President, known as Herbert Hoover. Swiss specialists are heavily present in Silicon Valley. And let's not forget that Zurich with its, including outer suburbs, 820'000 inhabitants has more corporate headquarters than the 10 mio city of Paris. This quantity wise cannot be matched by local forces

Criticism must be allowed, accepted and even appreciated, regardless of whether it come from a local or a foreigner. But wherever you criticize you always should carefully check the facts. I admit, facts can spoil the joy but of course have to be taken into account always

Welcome to the Club ! But do not fall into the "self-image TRAP". Do not forget that Switzerland does not have a "worldwide image" and is not carefully monitored by billions of people all the time. The initiative-sh... of last weekend will cause problems here for years, but in the world overall, it will be forgotten. If you look back at the Thatcher days when Britain suddenly made immigration rules stricter, many Brits also feared for the image of their country. But in spite of Britain having a far higher "public profile" than Switzerland, this matter in the world got forgotten within 2 months. The worst aspect of the initiative here anyway was the methods and ways of the SVP propaganda. I mentioned similar laws in GB and Germany, and Brits and Germans can tell me in thousands of words that things there are ALL different from here, the reality however remains that Switzerland, thanks to the unholy alliance of SVPlers and the left wing of the SP, followed the lead of other European countries. What I in fact oppose to is the gradual erection of "Fortress Europe". Whether the legalistic "Maginot Lines" are the way into the future for Europe is what I have most severe doubts about !

Yes you're missing the point...and you should have red some...

First, there is already a system for deporting criminal foreigners, and nobody is questioning that.

This new initiative gives the right to deport foreigners regardless of how long they have been living, regardless if they are born here, regardless of background etc. (this is the only country in Europe that went this far, everywhere else this is taken into consideration)

If this was not enough, it also an automatic deportation mechanism which allows for deportation without the chance to appeal. (also the only country in europe)

Also the initiative which was made by SVP, used a very cheap and tasteless xenophobic campaign, and also they gave very convenient "statistics", i.e. was not telling the truth...(e.g. they used foreigners without a permit in their statistics and put all sorts of crimes together, e.g. shoplifting with e.g. violence)

The counterpart was seen very little, i.e. don't care...

When you rely on foreign work labour you will also get the bad eggs, there is no system in world that will prevent this...

I would rather see an initiative how to handle crime through prevention, not how to handle it after it's made...

So, anyway, now that SVP has "won" we will only have crimes committed by Swiss, and then who will they blame?

Yes, but don't forget "facts" can be manipulated. I prefer not to always stay on the peripheral of subjects and get down to the "nitty gritty" as they say. People get offended because the truth can hurt. Whereas if you just stay on the so-called facts they feel safer. Wikipedia is for everyone, truth isn't...anyways (yawn) But I understand what you mean.

What is being a criminal to you? Stealing an apple? Robbing a bank? Murder, Rapist? Speed offense?

Here is the problem, no matter what is the offense, the result is deportation. If you are guilty of speeding 40 km/h above the limit, does it make you a criminal?

It isn't all about Black and white, the grey zone is where? is what?

Sorry love, this is simply rubbish. The crimes proposed for deportation are serious and/or repeated and do NOT stealing apples or speeding. You can be assured when the law is drawn up it will be black & white and include only very serious crimes...
