Selling a car in Switzerland

Any ideas? Trying to sell our RAV 4 but no takers as yet. Does anyone recommend taking it back to the dealers, or are there other marketplaces available here?

You probably need to lower the price, possibly significantly, if the price is right it will sell quickly.

Re: Selling a car in Switzerland

In general, the following is true about the Swiss when buying cars:

1) They buy new or nearly new from a main dealer
2) They use the same dealer almost religiously
3) And the same salesman
4) They buy in March/April

And that is pretty much it. There are cars sold throughout the year - but it isn't as many as "peak" time. If they do buy older used cars - they buy with fresh service and MFK - from a dealer or mechanic.

Well....if this is the case, I would still own my car as:
(and I saw "in general")

1) it was 4 years old and sold by me privately.
2) it was my first car sold in CH and I have never before sold to the guy who bought it.
3) see no. 2
4) I sold it in October.

...and the car did not have a fresh MFK and I am neither a dealer or mechanic.

I took some damned good pictures, described all the extras and advertised it on Autoscout for approx. 2K CHF lower than what similar cars could be bought for at dealers. My phone started to ring with potential buyers right away and it was sold within 12 hours.

Conclusion: If you have a popular car and price it fairly there is ALWAYS at least one buyer and one buyer is all you need.

Good luck with the sale.

Re: Selling a car in Switzerland

You could also try the free websites in and around the Geneva area: WRS, Anglo Info, and Glocals. Good luck. We have bought and sold extensively through these websites and they have proved lucky for us.

Re: Selling a car in Switzerland

...does anyone know if it possible to sell, or even use for part exchange, a car to Swiss dealers with foreign plates. The time is nearing where I need to get my plates switched over but I want to swap cars anyway so this would be a convenient option. It's an Italian car so LHD, still under warranty, 3 years old, low mileage so i would hope they might be interested in taking it off my hands?

Apologies for hijacking the original post.

No it's not possible. Take it back home and sell it there.

Re: Selling a car in Switzerland

We sold our LHD Range Rover that we imported from the UK.

Advertised on autoscout24.ch and it took around three weeks to sell. Had five or so people come and look at it and sold it to a lady from Zurich (for 20k CHF more than the garage offered). Saying it, the car was still under warranty (3.5 years old) and in perfect condition.

If you are interested, here is the thread/details of the car:

http://www.englishforum.ch/sale-want...2-000-chf.html

All in all, relatively painless process but as others have said, it does help to have a desirable car.
