Who you gonna call?? [Minor traffic accident]

If you where to skid off the road and take out a plastic bollard who should you call? the police, council, someone else? or just carry on and hope no one saw you?

Particularly bearing in mind this is Switzerland and you can guarantee someone HAS seen you and has certainly written your number down and WILL send it to the police!

Re: Who you gonna call??

Somewhat different circumstances, but I called my insurance company first - they then told me who to call next.

Please stick to forum etiquette. Your friend just skidded off the road...

The cops are the ones to call if you're going to make a call, because their report is the one you'll need for any insurance claim, now or in the future if you ascertain damage to your vehicle. Of course, if you choose to drive on and there were no witnesses, that's up to you.

Re: Who you gonna call?? [Minor traffic accident]

From "Driving Today" guide to Swiss motoring rules:

929. If only material damage has been caused, the person involved must inform the owner of the property at once indicating his name and address. If this is not possible, he must contact the police immediately (also in the case of parking damage). It is not sufficient to leave a visiting card on the damaged vehicle.

Re: Who you gonna call?? [Minor traffic accident]

I would suggest that this hypothetical person :

1) phones their insurance co. ( as suggested above )
2) invests in some better snow tires.
3) takes a course on winter driving skills.

That is what they ought to do. However, I have not know a single person who has caused parking damage to leave ANY details.

I know no one is going to believe me, but it really is a friend, I don't think they will bother to claim as there car is pretty bashed up already, but they don't want the police knocking on there door at 3am for not reporting it either.

in the uk it would be the council who owned the bollard and would come after you, so they just want to know who to contact to pay for it.

Re: Who you gonna call?? [Minor traffic accident]

Well .. this same thought had crossed my mind ... so I asked my Swiss friend what he would do if he skidded off the road ... and he said "walk to the nearest farmhouse as quick as possible, and ask them to tow my car back onto the road, before the Polizei get there"......... If you skid off the road, the polizei fine you for reckless driving!

But .... I reckon like the above posters ...... better to actually report it, phone the Polizei from inside the car .. rather than take the risk they arrive while I`m trudging thru the snow to the farmhouse!

Better still ..... I try my utmost to NOT drive in the present snowy conditions!

Check that your friend's number plate did not fall off & is lying by the bollard as a silent witness....

Re: Who you gonna call?? [Minor traffic accident]

If you hit the bollard:

1) You will have left paint on the bollard
2) The police will take a sample of the paint and take into their labs
3) The labs will identify the paint
4) The labs will identify the batch of the paint
5) The labs will identify the subset of chassis numbers that that paint was used on
6) The labs will narrow down the subset to those imported into Switzerland
7) The labs will narrow down the subset to those cars most likely to be in that area based on the owner details
8) The labs will pass the name of the owner to the police who will arrest the individiual - fine him for careless driving
9) The labs will invoice the owner for their hard work.

Well that is what would happen in Las Vegas, Miami or New York (except for the invoice bit - that would only happen in CSI Zurich)

years ago a mate of mine, drunk as a skunk one night, took out a lamp post. No one was around to see it so he dragged the post to the side of the roadand continued on his merry drunken way home where he happily passed out... only to be awoken a few hours later by a trooper at his door. ... The cop had followed the line of leaky radiator fluid the two miles to his door. *L*

Moral of the story: If you burn down the lab, there is no way they'll be able to trace ya.

Surely there are 3 options:

1) Kill Bob
2) Kill yourself
3) Kill everyone else in the world
