Electric Cars - Many new models coming for 2011/2

I'm looking for a new car for 2011 & I've been reading up about what could be available that is as eco-friendly as can be. After a fair bit of research I was intrigued to see that there are quite a few of the Electric kind & have taken a liking to some of the more futuristic-style examples.

Quote:
Cars to be launched as early as January next year include the Mitsubishi i-Miev, Peugeot Ion and Smart Fortwo. Electric models to follow in March include the new Nissan Leaf and Tata Vista. To follow on the campaign from 2011 straight into 2012 is Chevrolets' Volt, Citroen C Zero, the much anticipated Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid and the new Vauxhall Ampera.
Here is a piece I found that started it all off & here (amazingly) is a little about the history of them.

Anyone know more or driven one?

They do appear to be very green. Out of interest, this electricity that powers them, where is it coming from ?

Well Mike, it comes from a socket......that you then put a plug into

Just like this one in the link:

And the socket goes to a big powerstation which pollutes like mad Mr T. So they aren't as green as first appears.

Well Mike, if (as it seems) they will be as popular as predicted & by the time you may end up buying one you may have 'pumps' (like the ones that we have now that allow you to choose eg. unleaded 95, unleaded 98, Premium etc etc) that read: non-renewable energy 2015 (dirty old powerstation), renewable energy 2015 (Hydro/wind/sea/Solar)

From what I recall, power stations produce much less pollution per energy unit than an engine in a car. Also isn't some electricity hydro-electric?

Re: Electric Cars - Many new models coming for 2011/2

The manufacturing of these vehicles, including lightweight materials, new production lines, huge battery packs and battery factories is far from green. It is far greener to buy second hand older petrol models and run them for 8-10 years.

Re: Electric Cars - Many new models coming for 2011/2

True but a normal car isn't exactly green either.

How much extra pollution does one of these cars produce during manufacturing compared to a standard car? How much less pollution will they cause during their life than that regular car. I would assume that it's a good deal less but I have no facts to back it up.

Even if they produce approximately the same amount of pollution (for arguments sake), I'd still prefer them as a)they are quieter b) they don't pollute in the cities meaning a less polluted and healthier city.

Just my 2 cents

Re: Electric Cars - Many new models coming for 2011/2

Even if electric cars aren't any greener in the end than normal gas guzzlers, I think the idea is that sooner than later an alternative is needed. No good to just wait for that day and expect "poof" magic viable alternative. So they get the ball rolling now, develop the technology, get a little support from the public, etc. etc. and so on and so on. Maybe electric cars aren't the end solution, but everything is achieved in steps.

There is only one electric car worth considering but it's not available in Europe yet. The Honda FCX Clarity.

Again, Overall ,Eco/Green cars are only green to run, overall, their carbon footprint is much greater and does more harm due to the manufacturing process. Don't be fooled. Driving cars is a very small part of the pollution problem.

You got any articles which explains all that, gives figures etc? I'd be interested to read them.

While I realise that driving cars is not the largest contributer to climate change (cows release more co2 per year), they are a huge contributor to pollution in cities.

Just bear in mind, a medium-sized dog has the same "carbon footprint" (God, I hate that term) as a large SUV.

Re: Electric Cars - Many new models coming for 2011/2

or check here, they have vehicles for testdrives here in Schieren:
http://www.friends-of-sam.com/

I think they look really cute and are priced realistically (15500 chf plus a monthly lease for the battery). They remind
me a bit of the Messerschmidt bubblecars from the 60-ies...

I did laugh...but all small cars look very much the same so it is easy to say the Cygnet looks like a Toyota..and it looks like a C1...and a twingo etc etc

Re: Electric Cars - Many new models coming for 2011/2

Electric cars are being forced on the market by daft politicians thinking this is the answer to keeping the freedom of private transport and at the same time being "green".

The fact is the technology is simply not there - yet. It will be about 25 years before batteries or some form of power cell are efficient enough to power cars.

Small petrol engines are still "greener" in a dust to dust calculation...
