Help! Trying to get back from UK to Switzerland

Hi, is anyone driving back from the UK to Switzerland this week?
We are stranded in London and need to get back to CH as we have invited the whole family to our home in CH. Swiss were really unhelpful and rude and said the earliest flight back to Zurich would be on Friday evening. But today is Monday! Has anyone got any idea? Train is fully booked. Flights not going. Airports overcrowded. Luggage is missing too. Now we just want to get back to CH. Thanks for any help!

If you need money...I could lend you some. Otherwise, I can't really help you out.

Re: Help! Trying to get back from UK to Switzerland

Im having the opposite problem... spent the last 7 hours at the airport in Zurich and was then told the flight was cancelled (for the second day running, but at least yesterday it was cancelled without me being at the airport) after a 2 hour delay. Tried to rebook for tommorrow but the flight is full, and Wednesday isnt looking good either as I just talked to my old man and it's apparently bucketing down with snow (he lives very close to Gatwick), so Wednesday looks like a no-go too.

Gatwick airport is a dead-zone at the moment and the plane that was supposed to turn up to Zurich never left the airport. When they announced the cancellation there were people at the airport having breakdowns, crying their eyes out, as some had been stuck in CH for 3 days! Oh, and did I mention Sleazyjet cracked my suitcase when removing it from the warehouse? Not nice... not nice at all.

EDIT - Good luck though Lizzy, hope you make it!

Re: Help! Trying to get back from UK to Switzerland

Thanks. Money is currently not a problem. I have friends in the UK we can stay at, but the Christmas is ruined if we have to stay here. It's a nightmare. We really have to get back this week somehow.

Please, if anyone is going back to CH, or anywhere on the mainland Europe, please let us know.

Re: Help! Trying to get back from UK to Switzerland

We're in the same boat. Our plane was already to go at Gatwick but there was't anyone to fly it, then the snow came down. There's no flights till the 26th. So we either stay here for Christmas or we get a car somehow and take the ferry.

Re: Help! Trying to get back from UK to Switzerland

We are expecting nearly 20 guests for Christmas eve. I'm trying to sort some kind of transport but you can't even hire a car. Maybe I should just go to Dover and see if anyone would take us. sigh. What a nightmare.
But at least we don't have to stay at the airport tonight like all those other poor stranded souls...

Ask a hire car company where there is a car available and go get it. Good luck.

I think other people might have had this idea before her.
Also, I know from a friend that renting a car in the UK to drive it to France is not what you are supposed to do normally.

Maybe travel Dover and find a boat that carries you over?
Sort of Dunkirk reversed ;-)

Re: Help! Trying to get back from UK to Switzerland

I seem to remember when this happened with the volcano that there were lots of mentions on the forum about other ferry routes to try when the main tunnel is closed...but I guess they are less useful in the winter time ?

I know there is also snow around some of the other major ports, and I'm not sure about the routes through France or further north...

Otherwise, Qantas are saying it will take 24 hours once the airport is clear to solve the backlog at Singapore, Hong Kong and other Asian routes...the main problem is planes stuck on the tarmac at the major London airports, and from what other have said, pilots who are outside their limit for flying hours....

I do not know if this is an option for you but in April (volcano) my husband and his work colleague took a Taxi from London to Schwyz. It cost about CHF 5'000. Good luck I hope you can find a solution.

You could buy a car and drive it over cheaper then that! A decent car with mot etc can be picked up for 1k in the uk

Re: Help! Trying to get back from UK to Switzerland

Get to Dover and get an LD lines ferry to Boulogne. You should be able to get a train to Paris where you'll have plenty of options. Good luck.

Re: Help! Trying to get back from UK to Switzerland

this is what I would do

Get down south, find a plane that was going anywhere in europe, france, germany, italy etc and get on it, once your on the mainland it'll be a whole lot easier to get a train / rent a car etc and get home. You have more airport choice down south, gatwick. heathrow, london city, luton, stansted and manston

Failing that buy or borrow a car from someone in the uk, give direct line a call, get it insured, drive it here, phone directline, cancel insurance and you wont be charged a penny for it (within 14 days iirc), then sell / scrap car here (or if borrowed drive it back)

Or just get down to dover, walk on a ferry and get a train to paris from calais, then get the fast train from paris to zurich.

I had to do option 1 when easyjet cancelled my flight back from scotland a couple of weeks ago

Ok, maybe it's just because I'm from Anchorage or something but looking at the amount of snow on the ground at Heathrow I can't help but think "What's the big deal here?"

because even though the uk lose tens of millions of pounds everytime the airport is shut, they refuse to invest 100k on a snow plough, its a joke.

Re: Help! Trying to get back from UK to Switzerland

or go to manchester and fly from there. These were the flights available as of 9.00 Swiss time today. Less chance of snow and more chance of flying than from birmingham. Also I've attached the arrivals and departures time for today, which looksl ike things are still running fine so far.

It's not so grim Up North.

There's a bus departing at 2 pm from Victoria to Basel and Zurich. See nationalExpress.com it's an 18 hour journey though.
