ZVV Night Network services 24.12 to 26.12

Please note: no nighttime network on 24/25 and 25/26 December 2010!

ZVV

How to buy tickets for other times using the ZVV Nightime Network:

You need two tickets to use the ZVV nighttime network.

  • A ZVV ticket or pass valid for the journey from your point or departure to your destination (ZVV ticket, GA travelcard, etc.)
  • A night supplement. A single supplement costs CHF 5 (at standard ZVV automatic ticket machines: *162 or at touch-screen ticket machines). Supplements can be bought as a card containing 6 supplements, available at points of sales (German) or ticket shop (German) for CHF 27. Half-Fare travelcards and other discount cards do not entitle you to a discount on the night supplement

The zkbnightcard is being replaced by the zkbnachtschwärmer.
With the zkbnachtschwärmer, night owls holding a ZKB Jugendprivatkonto (private account for young people) or ZKB Bildung plus account (for students up to the age of 30) will save each time they use the ZVV nighttime network. If you have a zkbnightcard, you will not receive a new card at the end of the year. Instead you will now be able to purchase the ZVV night supplement quickly and easily by SMS, effective immediately. Your current zkbnightcard remains valid up until 31 December 2010.
It couldn’t be simpler
  • To use the zkbnachtschwärmer, first register in advance at the link below.
  • Prior to each homeward journey, send “ZKBNZ” to 988 (CHF 0.20/SMS).
  • The zkbnachtschwärmer will be instantly sent to your cell phone as an SMS.
  • Present the received SMS along with your valid ticket and an official identity document to the ticket inspector upon request.

night train extra charge on New Year's eve?

The SBB staff at the station I asked at tonight were split on the answer so wondering if anyone here knows...do you have to pay the extra charge for the night train on New Year's Eve?

We are thinking of joining in the crowds for the fireworks, but don't want to end the night off with a fine, but also don't want to deal with super long lines at the ticket station unless we have to!

I don't see any mention of New Year's eve on ZVV's website, but note this under nighttime Network:

Hours of operation: the nights of Friday/Saturday and Saturday/Sunday, plus the night before most public holidays

ask the conductor before you get on the train! and it always says whether you need it or not on the schedule on the big board!

you guys plan everything??

take a little risk, I'm sure they're not gonna be bothered on NYE

haha - not everything but since there was the recent post about getting a fine for the night train, it did make me think about it! would rather use the $$ towards having fun the rest of the night anyway than a train fine

I used this SMS method last night, though nobody was checking. The SMS I got makes me think it would be very easy to falsify it. How are they going to control this??

They can't!
Just make sure you don't do it very often cos if you get caught it so not worth it :-)

Anyone with access to an sms gateway can set up a link somewhere on the net that when they click on it, it sends an SMS in the same way the SBB send it to you. Unless there is a reference number that the conductor can check on their machine, then it's easily doable.

Question is: is it worth it?

It isn't for me at least

Re: night train extra charge on New Year's eve?

I don't even think it has to be that complicated... In my phone, you have to scroll down a lot of see who sent the message... you can just send an SMS to yourself with the "From: 988" line somewhere. And yes there is a ref number in the SMS, but it's 20 digits or something, I can't imagine the conductor checking 20 passengers! They'd still be there in the morning... Especially if you have to show it when boarding a bus and the driver has to get going.

Anyway, I am not going to do it, of course, I am happy with the service because I don't like counting coins or the "old" machines where you have to type *162(?), I'd much rather have it deducted from my cellphone. Just saying I think it's really easy to abuse the system, unfortunately.

Re: ZVV Night Network services 24.12 to 26.12

you can also just buy the advanced surcharge and keep it with ya.

you punch it it when you need it and it lasts for 12 hours
Good fallback plan

Didn't you know that the SBB has a permanent link to EF to see what ideas our guys and gals are coming up with?

Really.. it would be great if a GA already covered the extra charge for the night. I mean the person dished a lot of money.

also, ouchboy should get free rides on the train

Yep, but the other thing to remember about the night services is that in most places they operate outside the subsidy model that pays for a large chunk of the daytime services - they're expensive to run (overtime, extra staff, and the like) so need to get extra revenue from the farebox to be financially viable as they have to pay the full operating cost themselves. As I understand it, the ZVV night services operate at break-even level.
