Buying Left Hand Drive Car from UK and Bringing it to CH

Hi

I've been looking at LHD cars on Autotrader in UK and see that they're obviously considerably cheaper than here in Switzerland. I moved here about 4 months ago but never brought a car with me. If I were to purchase a second hand car from UK, would I have to pay substantial costs to bring it to CH?

Sorry if this has been discussed before.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers

Gully.

in any case remember, parking exits meters are on the left side, drive true is on the left side, post box is on the left side, etc etc etc. Also if you want to sell again...well bring it back to the UK cause no one here will take it or you will lose alot of value
Look into cars from Germany or France that are LHD.

Just some suggestions for you to look at

Does LHD mean something else in the UK?

No, LHD is what we use here, RHD in the UK.

The OP was figuring that since LHDs are cheaper in the UK than RHDs (for obvious reasons, it could make sense to buy one there.

Re: Buying Left Hand Drive Car from UK and Bringing it to CH

I never read any threads about people successfully importing a UK car with no hassle and no substantial cost. I have read some describing quite the opposite. In my case my UK car lasted about 3 months here before I drove it back and dumped it, due to the costs I would have incurred to pass the MFK inspection.

Re: Buying Left Hand Drive Car from UK and Bringing it to CH

Thanks Guys

I'd read about the general hassles that people had been having bringing over RHD cars. I wasn't sure if buying a cheap LHD car in UK might reduce the amount of hassle enough to make it worth while (weighing up possible cost saving vs hassle). It looks like I'll be searching for a "cheap" run-a-round here then.

Cheers

Cheap???? did you just get here???? haha jk jk.

remember to check insurance and road tax before you buy. It is nice to buy a cheap old heavy Mercedes but when you look at the roadtax....(here in FR it is based on cc of the engine).
And I would suggest not buying to old of a car (old meaning run down in this case) because if you like at repair costs here (and 150+chf hourly rate....)you might want to get a reliable car

Re: Buying Left Hand Drive Car from UK and Bringing it to CH

if you did not own the car before bringing it in, you will get to pay import duty on what they consider the value of the car.

that might not be good news

That's right, but they accepted my bill of sale, no questions. The car cost 10k and I paid CHF 2k in tax.

I have my MFK very soon and am a little nervous. However, I'm hoping it will be ok as the car isn't modified and has a european certificate of conformity. Most of the problems I've heard of are with modified cars and those without a european certificate of conformity.

I would normally advise against it, but mine is a bit special, and would've cost more than twice as much if I'd bought it here.

Well I'll add one then!

We imported a LHD Range Rover from the UK into Switzerland and with very little hassle (other than a lot of paperwork).

Re: Buying Left Hand Drive Car from UK and Bringing it to CH

We brought our Discovery as part of our move here - as part of our belongings. It had to be done officially at our local customs office - and if I remember right it costs nothing. But there was some paperwork involved. We then had to register the car here- and had to have all the official MOT type testing/pollution testing, etc, and get Swiss number plates and road tax- can't remember the actual figures, but it was not expensive. Our car was quite new- so no problem with all the tests - but it might be a different story with an older car- as pollution testing might be more difficult here.
I am NO expert- but would say if an older car, you are taking a risk that they won't pass it. We also have bank accounts, address, etc, in the UK - but working here and living here - you cannot run a car on UK plates, insurance and mot.
