Lausanne to Basel

Hello,
I'm a Canadian student and am considering studying at the University of Basel.
However, my grandfather lives in Lausanne and I was thinking about commuting everyday if I do go to UofB.

So far I have not been able to figure out if the university is within 4 tram stops of the trains, which means I wouldn't pay?

I was also wondering if my calculations are correct:
Th Half fare pass costs 165 for a year. and the second class monthly pass is 370. But it would be half price, so approximately 185 a month?

And the additional cost of traveling to the Lausanne train station.

Hopefully I made sense.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Lausanne to Basel

a pass covering the whole country works out to be about 260 francs per month. Consider that.

for everything else including travel times.......www.rail.ch

I hope grandpa likes you, btw

Re: Lausanne to Basel

www.sbb.ch, available in English, will show you the quickest public transport route from Basel SBB to Universität - and by clicking the appropriate button, you can find out how many stops there are. (Hint - bus 30).

I don't know how convenient that'll be...they're not exactly neighbouring cities...

That's not too bad, thanks.
Well my Grandpa is my mothers uncle, but in our culture we call our grandparents' siblings and cousins also grandpa and grandma. Thats why I'm a bit undecided about if I want to go.

It is very inconvenient, but I am also considering the possibility of using the commute as time to study.

Re: Lausanne to Basel

Door-to-door is probably going to be close to 3 hours each way. That seems excessive to me. If you do decide to do it, then if you need to travel for at least 10 months a year then buying the AG (general travel pass) for a full year will be cheaper than paying monthly (the full year is cheaper, plus you can get up to one month refunded from the cost of the pass if you deposit it at a train station for that period of time).

6 hours a day on a train!!!!!!! I think you will get pretty tired of that very quickly. For sure get a GA, its cheaper and you can just put it in your wallet and forget about tickets alltogether.

Forget it.

Live in Basel and go see Gramps on the weekends.

Re: Lausanne to Basel

6 hours probably will be tough everyday. depends how frequent you will have classes. If you can manage 2/3 days a week. It might be possible. Best of luck!

Re: Lausanne to Basel

I do 18 hours in 3 days a week on Swiss trains. But I have a SIM card in my laptop and can work/surf.

It's not the end of the world, I would however not have done this 10 years ago. It would be too hard to socialise and get laid

Re: Lausanne to Basel

There are many acceptable ways to waste your youth, and 6 hrs on a train each day isn't one of them...

Maybe you could find less crowded trains?

Re: Lausanne to Basel

I think I'll commute if I get in. I don't need a social life for the year and a half. Its a Masters program and there aren't too many courses so for some of the days I won't need to get up early.

BTW, What a GA?

Re: Lausanne to Basel

Sorry, I just can't see 6 hours on the train as being a sensibl use of your time. Bear in mind, your lectures could start at 8 am, you;'ll be getting up at 4 am. And it's not inconceivable that you'll finish at 5 or 6 pm.

Honestly, you would be CRAZY to consider this. If you were talking about Lausanne and Geneva, it would make sense- but Lausanne and Basel are too far apart, and have different languages too don't forget. I could almost cope with a commuteonce a week, but definitely not every day.
