Best way to commute from Horgen to Schaffhausen?

Help Please! I have been trying to figure out commuting options for my husband from a house we are looking at renting in Horgen. I want to make sure I am estimating this correctly, and that I am covering all options available from a commuting perspective. Detailed below is what I come up with and the sites I am using. Would you be able to tell me if I am calculating time estimates correctly? Also, please let me know if I have considered all options? Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide on this matter. One last note is that our children will be attending Zurich International School so our goal is to remain within a 15 minute drive to their school in Wadenswil which is why we are house hunting in the Silver Coast (we realized my husband would have a longer commute).

1st Option...Take Train from Horgen to Spitalstrasse 5 Schaffhausen Sh 8201 I come up with any where from 1 hour 30 minutes -1 hour 50 minutes. (I got these time estimates on this site (http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/en?) Not sure if this is the site I should be using?

2nd Option...Driving from Horgen to Spitalstrasse 5 Schaffhausen Sh 8201 Google Maps shows from 59 minutes to 1 hour and four minutes.

One last question...if he were to take public transportation every day what would be the best pass to purchase the Halbtaxcard or the Swiss Pass (during our stay we will be doing a lot of sight seeing so I imagine we will be taking various trains which I believe is one of the advantages of the Swiss Pass also would like to be able to take the Ferry to the Gold Coast whenever we needed...not sure if one pass is better for this purpose)?

Re: Best way to commute from Horgen to Schaffhausen?

enoodles, I posted in your other thread about the commute before I saw this thread. Horgen to Schaffhausen is not such a great commute. You are looking at the right website for public transport. As for car, his drive will take him right through the centre of Zurich which is a nightmare (whatever Google Maps says) and taking the highway around Zurich is also not so great as traffic if often backed up at the main tunnel there where three highways come together.

As I said in my other post, have you considered the ZIS campus in Baden? If you lived somewhere between Baden and the German border it would be an easy commute for the children to school and there are direct trains from Waldshut (just over the border) to Schaffhausen (29 minutes). If your husband chose to drive it wouldn't take more than an hour, but he would not have to cross any large cities or known "black spots".

Maybe worth a thought.

Another useful site for planning is here

Directions

1hr09m 64.2km distance

I'd invest in a GA though. One can use the comfortable high speed German ICE trains plying between Zurich and German border towns that stop at Schaffhausen, go on day trips on the Postauto, access to Mobility, visit Milan for a song or France on a cruise etc. You pay less for a GA using REKA cheques that your employers may sell / give you.

Personally I would say "can the idea"

90mins+ commute - each way - is going to hurt - and cut down on the time he will be able to spend with the children.

Focus on finding something the other side of Zurich - Ebmatingen, Binz, Fallanden - are all easy drives to the ICS in Zumikon.

Re: Best way to commute from Horgen to Schaffhausen?

I agree with the others. Horgen - Schaffhausen can be done with daily commuting but it might be worth looking into other English / Bilingual schools which are nearer to Schaffhausen (I bet they exist). If the other side of the lake is really better for commuting to Schaffhausen? I have my doubts but you should check that. Try to drive with the car from Horgen to Schaffhausen on the time your husband would on a working day and see if the traffic is ok. The detour around Zurich will be better even it it's sometimes also blocked.

The Swiss Pass is only available if you're here for a vacation (as far as I know) which means you either need a GA (as mentionned before) or just a ticket from Horgen to Schaffhausen. Ask at the trainstation in Zurich or at the airport they can help you choose the right ticket. The GA might be cheaper if you do some more travelling by train as it includes all of Switzerland.

Good luck!

Re: Best way to commute from Horgen to Schaffhausen?

You don't say how old your children are, but the ZIS campus in Wädenswil is only for a specific age range. If they are nearing the 'top edge' of this, you may find going to school in a different place quite soon. Campus ZIS

Driving through/round Zürich - one can have a game guessing how long the jam is for the trip through the tunnels each morning...

Good luck with your preparations.

He's right !

BTW, despite what the Zuri dwellers think, Winterthur is a nice town. You will get more for your money, it's less money obsessed. But it is a bit smaller!
Binz is ok - I lived there for 4 years. Ebmat has a bit more to it - there is always Volketswil

Re: Best way to commute from Horgen to Schaffhausen?

When deciding on schooling and where to live, I think the husband`s commute, or the wife's, or in some cases, both, is an extremely important consideration. There is something to be said for the quality of family life and having a reasonable commute is a factor in this. I have clients who want to live 20 minutes from their workplace, maximum 30 minutes. Others are willing to commute longer.

No matter what you find on the internet in terms of routes by car, those who know those routes will tell you about the traffic. It can be a huge problem. With public transport the commute times are pretty much what you see, you just have to calculate how to get to and from the train station or bus stop.

Re: Best way to commute from Horgen to Schaffhausen?

that single carriage section up to Schaffhausen is horrid. Driving it until they finish the new highway would not be something I'd be looking to do.

How old are your kids and what's your motivation to send them to an international school btw?

Re: Best way to commute from Horgen to Schaffhausen?

In and around Zurich and peak times is bad for traffic - although not impossible - even the "rat-runs" get busy - if you know them.

Trying to live on the "wrong" side of the lake for a commute won't make anyone happy. Forget going through Rapperswil and up - that is chaos (across the dam) - and the motorway to Hinwil isn't much better when it drops to 1 lane.

Re: Best way to commute from Horgen to Schaffhausen?

Off topic but it might mean something to some folk on here.

When we lived in Buckinghamshire GB, we had a Swiss visitor staying with us who had made an appointment for 9 a.m. on a Monday morning in Maidstone, Kent. He couldn't understand why Mr L and I fell off our chairs laughing. He left our house at dark o'clock and got there at 11.a.m.

Are you aware of the fact that there is an international school in Schaffhausen as well?

Re: Best way to commute from Horgen to Schaffhausen?

Just wanted to thank everyone for your advice and information! During our November visit to Switzerland, we toured all the International Schools near Zurich (ZIS Baden, ZIS Wadenswil, Winterthur, ICS, Schaffhausen) as this was our primary focus. After a lot of consideration, the school we kept coming back to as the best fit for our family was the ZIS in Wadenswil. All three of our children have been accepted and we are very happy to have their spots reserved.

Now that we finalized the school situation, we need to nail down our housing situation. We understand it is difficult to find a single house/villa in Switzerland so we are trying to be very flexible about the location. Both my husband and I are willing to commute. My husband would prefer his commute to be longer since he has a flexible work arrangement and will not be reporting to the office every day. He is going to be visiting Switzerland this weekend to try and understand the train/commuting situation from the Silver Coast better. The information you have provided will come in handy during his visit.

I'm trying to be very proactive and currently have around 18 properties saved to my Watch List in Home Gate as possible matches. With that said, I am now trying to learn as much as I can about the various locations to really narrow in on the perfect house/location for our family. This site has been such a great learning tool for me!

Again, thanks so much for all your help and suggestions.

Eileen

Our children are 7, 6 and 5. There are several reasons we are sending our children to an International school here are just a few... 1st, the International schools teach in English which is our Mother Tongue, 2nd, we wanted to make the relocation as easy as possible for our children and the school we selected teaches a very similar curriculum to what they are currently learning (i.e. Everyday Mathematics, etc.) 3rd, we are excited that our children will be learning German, however since our assignment is 3-5 years we did not want them to fall behind due to language barriers they might encounter in the short term. 4th, the school we selected had a very similar learning environment to their current school which we believe will help them with their transition. Our motivation to send our children to an International school was based on what we believe would best meet the needs of our children. I hope this helps answer some of your questions. Have a great day!

if you are making that commute every day, then you should get the GA.

but i can't believe someone would want to do such a long commute. would getting a pied a terre in Schaffhausen be an option?

Re: Best way to commute from Horgen to Schaffhausen?

Enoodles- just curious if you found anything and what your current status is?

Seems my family & I are in the exact same scenario as you...commuting issue to Schaffhausen with kids possibly going to ZIS (although my boys will be 11 and 14) & trying to find housing

I'd be curious how it all worked out since right now, I'm stressing over all the uncertainties....

Thank you

Hi mattyup,

Welcome to the Forum. We are also relocating to Switzerland this year. We relocated a few years ago from New Jersey to Williamsburg, but still have a lot of family in NJ and visit often.

Our children will be going to ZIS this August. Even though my husband will be working in Schaffhausen which is going to be a long commute, we decided it would be best for us to live close to our children’s school. So we focused our house hunting efforts on the silver coast. We got really lucky and found a house in Horgen.

Even though we had a relocation company working with us, we were very proactive in the house hunting efforts. I searched almost daily on Homegate ( http://www.homegate.ch/rent/real-estate-search), and other sites such as ImmoStreet and Comparis( http://www.immostreet.ch/en/RentSearch/Map/CH/e2cb300b-198b-416f-87b7-f8614d45eedb/3,2,4, http://en.comparis.ch/immobilien/marktplatz/detail-archive.aspx?id=4774553). I really liked one house so I contacted the Property Manager directly and everything just seemed to fall in place. We signed the lease and have our housing situation finalized. If you are still looking for a flat/apartment, my advice would be do a lot of the investigating work on your own. Don’t just rely on the Relocation Company. Here is a link to a very helpful post on house hunting websites I found on this forum (http://www.englishforum.ch/adverts-p...partments.html).

This site has been very helpful to me. I had and still have so many questions, and most of them I have been able to answer by looking at previous posts. If I wasn’t able to find the answer I would just start a new thread. The members of this forum are great and have a wealth of information. I am going to Private Message you my contact information. Feel free to contact me directly with specific questions you may have.

Have a great day!
Eileen

Re: Best way to commute from Horgen to Schaffhausen?

Hi Eileen,

Thank you for your information. I will start contacting directly.

We are locating in August too. My kids will be going to ZIS as well (or atleast hope to). My older son was accepted into the Upper School, while my younger son is on the waiting list for the Middle School.

We determined it was better for my husband to commute rather than the kids as well.

Maybe when we both arrive, we can meet.

Barb
