SBB Kurztrecke and Single Journey: Distance, Destination, Direction or Time?

As per the title - when I get a Kurztrecke it says all the stations it goes to, but it also says "30 minutes". Clearly I can get just about anywhere in Zone 10 in 30 minutes, but can I with that ticket?

For the "Single" Train journey (eg to Schaffhausen) it says "2 Hours" and "Via X" and then says all the Zones it's valid for. So can I go there and back within the 2 hours? Can I go there and back to eg. Oerlikon, jump out to buy a coke, get a new train back to HB all in the 2 hours? If not, what's the point of saying 2 hours if it's just valid for one journey to Schaffhausen?

Re: SBB Kurztrecke and Single Journey: Distance, Destination, Direction or Time?

This might shed some light:

What is the exact coverage of "Kurzstrecke"?

Also:

Quote:

EDIT:

Quote:
It is a single ticket (einzelbillet) for a short distance (kurzstrecke) travel second class (2.kl.) at half price (1/2).

Re: SBB Kurztrecke and Single Journey: Distance, Destination, Direction or Time?

Are there any ticket conditions on the reverse side of the ticket?

For the ticket to be valid in one direction only it should say "einfacher Fahrt" (one direction).

A single train journey ticket may have arrow in one direction or say "kein Retour" or "einfacher Fahrt". Return point to point train tickets have 2 arrows, one in both directs or "Retour" clearly written.

The strips of 6 tickets that we usually get say "einfacher Fahrt" in tiny writing on the back.

Says Einzelbillett on one of my tickets with "good until 13:10" and then a list of zones. No idea whether you can use it in the zones until 13:10 or whether it's a single or a one way but you can get off half way, and then continue on in the same direction until 13:10.

Re: SBB Kurzstrecke and Single Journey: Distance, Destination, Direction or Time?

As mentioned on that other thread, when you buy a Kurzstrecke ticket it has the station name printed on it. So that tells any collector exactly where you bought it. For each station there is a list of valid Kurzstrecke destinations, so if you go beyond that range then you're travelling without a ticket. But I guess you know that anyway.
You can get on and off as many times as you like within that range, uses buses or trams or even boats I guess. I've always assumed that you can go there and back on the same ticket, but I don't know for sure. They'd have to be pretty bored to check not only the time and whether you're within range but also whether you're going in the right direction.

The 30 minutes rule means that you can't spend all day going backwards and forwards on the same route. But you can get off, do something, get back on and go to your destination, and you're still well within the 30 minutes normally.

About the train, you can certainly get your coke from Oerlikon and then continue to Schaffhausen (within the 2 hours), but I'm pretty sure the ticket isn't valid for the return journey. As MarieZug says, for that you'd need a return ticket.

"Einzel" means single, so that is a single ticket, single direction. If you want to hop off along the way within the time the ticket is valid you can.

Re: SBB Kurztrecke and Single Journey: Distance, Destination, Direction or Time?

That is correct. Kurzstrecke are fixed from the starting point, usually only for a maximum of about 4 or 5 bus stops. All tickets are for only one general direction, you cannot double back or return. When there is a time specified, the journey must be completed within the time, otherwise you have to get off and buy another ticket.

Be aware the ticket inspectors are very unusual people, both suspicious and sadists and they love to give you a fine.

Also be aware that an SBB return ticket is only valid for just the one day (up until the last train that night).

Unless the single journey is more than 115 Km, then the return part is valid only up to 10 days

Distance ...... ..........
Up to 115 km ....1 day................... .1 day
.from 116 km ....1 day ..................10 days

So if you are going on holiday you might need to buy 2 single tickets.

At the SBB counter you can buy long term return tickets.

You can claim a refund for unused tickets, but there is a fee of CHF 5,--

ZVV and SBB are different organisations (even though SBB runs part of the ZVV network) and have a different concept regarding tickets.

http://www.zvv.ch/en/special-service...ndex.html#faq1

"What is the difference between ZVV tickets and tickets for the Swiss national public-transport network?
When travelling by ZVV, you pay for a combination of “area and time”; on the Swiss national transport network, you pay for a particular route."

Schaffhausen is outside ZVV area, a ticket to Schaffhausen won't cover any zones only a route on the SBB network eg HB-Schaffhausen or Stadelhofen-Schaffhausen, one way or two way.

Two way tickets don't exist on ZVV network. You can go back and forth as much as you like within time and area.
