Long haul rail travel for a song, esp. near border areas

Using the DB site ( can't do it feasibly with SBB though ), one can creatively buy a "single" ticket for a very cheap price, and sometimes on 1st Class. A return ticket, if planned properly, is not needed

For example:

Basel to Zurich ( ) the long way on 1st class for as little as EUR79 plus reservations costs. "Stopover"
at Bratislava and Munich for up to 24 hours.

OR

Basel to Thayngen, DE ( valid on HT / Tageskarte / GA as part of the synoptic map ) for as little as EUR63 inclusive of reservations with a "stopover" at Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

I'm looking for a "stopover" at St. Pancras International.

serious question:

What kind of work/ life makes you do this kind of search?

I mean: what's the motivation behind it?.

Re: Long haul rail travel for a song, esp. near border areas

It used to be possible to do a timetable enquiry from Zürich Stadelhofen SBB to Zürich Stadelhofen Forchbahn and the enquiry suggested a 5 hour plus trip involving taking the last S-Bahn at night to Hauptbahnof, walking to Central, waiting for the first tram in the morning, getting off at Bellevue and walking to Stadelhofen.

Unfortunately, that bug has since been fixed.

I enjoy long haul rail travel ( not everybody does ), and this has nothing to do with my work. Not affiliated to SBB/ DB etc. nor to any travel related company.

Work does not allow the luxury to travel beyond 1-2 days at a time for a Tagesausflug, and I'm on the lookout for deals and bargains without breaking the bank.

How about setting up an EF rail travel group for day trips to interesting places as I believe there are several of us?

Good idea, although I'd prefer if any non-Mod member created that group - I'm keen to contribute as well as pick up some tips.

Re: Long haul rail travel for a song, esp. near border areas

I just completed the longest possible trip from St. Margarethen to Basel SBB - via Munich, Dresden, Osnabruck, Freiburg / Blackforest! First Class cost me EUR89 all inclusive single ticket sleeping over in trains.

Re: Long haul rail travel for a song, esp. near border areas

I use a German / CH stations as a starting point and end up at another German / CH station with a sidetrip to one of their Specials zones.

For example Basel Bad Bhf ( which is very close to Basel SBB ), or Thayngen / Konstanz / Waldshut etc.

This would qualify for one of the many Specials offered by DB ( Europa, Schweiz, Dansk etc. ).

I do get home from these German / CH stations by using my GA ( or a HT / Spar Billet by SBB ).

That was how I got Basel Bad Bhf to Zurich HB via Hannover, DE ( 24hr stopover ) to CeBIT this March on 1st class for EUR49.
